Lt Col William Steele, commander of a U.S. military prison in Iraq, was arrested in March on a series of charges, including fraternising with a detainee's daughter, an inappropriate relationship with interpreter and providing her special privileges. Not to mention his porno stash, allowing detainees use of an unmonitored cell phone, mishandling classified information, failing to obey a lawful order, and failing obligations as approving authority for expenditure.

Sounds like he has used his vacation in Iraq to screw local girls, watch porn, and basically forgetting that he is supposed to be an officer providing proper leadership to young troops while running his post in a proper manner.

I guess being in charge of the second largest U.S. military prison in Iraq can be pretty stressful, and what better way to relieve that stress than by humping your interpreter and hooking up with a prisoner's daughter?

"His current status is that he is in confinement and waiting for his Article 32 hearing," the spokeswoman said.

The hearing would conducted by a panel of military officers who are to decide whether the suspect should face charges.

Way to continue to degrade the reputation of the U.S. military, Lt Col Steele!

Why don't you support the troops? Don't you liberals realize that you're making victory impossible?

Sorry, I forgot. Of course you realize that. You demand transparency and integrity from government because you hate freedom. I don't know how that could've slipped my mind.

One more nail.

It's actually not that hard to imagine this scenario, with a failure of leadership going all he way to the top. Sadly.

Something like this happens and you wonder if the reason the situation in Iraq isn't resolved is because of people like Lt Col Steele.

The situation in Iraq is not resolved because it was fallacy to begin with. The situation in Iraq will always include people like Lt Col Steele because he is a soldier occupying another country and under those conditions, this is bound to happen.

What should be shocking is the extent to which the US and the US military has fumbled this idiotic fantasy since day one.

You have absolutely no idea of the implications behind him fraternising with a prisoner's daughter and the message it could send to troops under his command, especially in a region where women are considered property.

STFU already.

Name a war where troops have NOT fraternized with the people they are occupying? Your acting like this sort of thing has never happened before and it happens all the time.

Providing unmonitored mobile phone to detainees
Mishandling classified information

These two offenses are the serious ones the rest probably would have been overloked were it not for these two.

Good point.

The level of isolation from the local culture that has distinguished both the invasion and occupation have crippled American efforts at pacification and reconstruction from even before the war's commencement.

I understand security is an extremely pertinent concern, but you can't reach out to people with a gauntleted hand from behind barbed wire and expect to forge a genuine connection. And without that connection, counterinsurgency operations are doomed from the beginning.

The military clearly believes that it is a matter of no import, as they've not counted fraternization amoung the charges.

Rape happens all the time, too, and that doesn't make it A-OK to do. Any troops caught screwing around with the local women should be punished, IMO. The fact that this man, as a very high ranking officer, has an oath-bound duty to be a role model to troops under his command, makes it worse. It is not so much his actions as the message it could send to the impressionable young men that he is leading.

Did you not even stop to ask yourself why a woman who's father was being held in prison would take it upon herself to sleep with the man in charge of keeping him imprisoned? Or why granting special privileges for sexual favors is also wrong?

Well, obviously it's just because he's that hot.

Why else would a woman sleep with a man?

Where does it say that they slept together? It just says 'fraternising' - I always took that to mean socialising, not neccessarily knocking boots.

If the couple did have sex, I'm not certain where I stand on it. On the one hand, I can see the conflict of interest and the potential damage to the reputation of the occupying forces. On the other hand, it just doesn't seem entirely right to prevent any member of the army from socialising with the people that live in the countries they are sent to.

Although I do agree that these are very worrying charges:

The term fraternising can be used for socialising, although they don't really charge people for having lattes together. It would be ridiculous, and there would be a lot of charges brought up.

But you are correct, I could be reading the entire situation wrong, and he could have just been being really nice to her.

The other charges are definitely worrying ones, and I truly hope that they get to the bottom of all of them in trial.

It would help immensely if you would read the posts:

If you cannot ascribe conflict of interest and manipulation to the prospect of this situation, then I am eternally grateful that you are not responsible for anything of import.

I did read that post. It was actually the reason I asked why people are assuming the couple had sex.

There is nothing in the original BBC source that claims they had sex. It just says they socialised. Just because she is a woman and he is a man and they are fraternising does not automatically mean they are fucking.

From Reuters

Lieutenant-Colonel William Steele is also charged with having an improper relationship with a translator and with the daughter of a detainee, providing mobile phones to prisoners, and unauthorised possession of classified information.

Whether or not they were fucking, he was having some type of relationship with her that the military has deemed inappropriate.

I think the point was that had they been simply being cordial, the odds are slim that charge would have been filed. You're right, we don't know they had sexual contact, but it's a relatively safe assumption.
