I'm lost

APR 23, 2007 04:51 PM

Saturday was a big day in Ashburn, Georgia. The students of Turner County High School had their very first integrated prom. Really makes you think of your first integrated prom, doesn’t it? White and black kids staring awkwardly at each other from across the room. The white kids dancing to country, the black kids to R&B. Man, those were the days. Oh wait, no they weren’t - because I wasn’t born in the forties.

Big changes are happening at Turner County High! Just this fall the county had their first solo homecoming queen. Previously the school had separate black and white homecoming queens. And now an integrated prom! Neat!

For years and years, Turner County High had separate proms for white and black students. Despite being an integrated school, the white students would raise money and hold their own prom and the black students would do the same.

But this year was different. Four senior class officers told the principal at the start of the year that they wanted an official prom with EVERONE invited. Wow.

"I couldn't be more proud of these young people," said Ray Jordan, the county's school superintendent. "The changes needed to come from the student body."

Fuck yes. Congratulations to those kids who are so backwards and retarded that it took until the year 2007 to come together. Bravo. And a really nice job on the part of the parents and teachers and townspeople to let it go on. You do not at all continue the stereotype of the Georgia racist.

So how did it go? Well, only two-thirds of the students showed up, most of whom were black. Oh, and the white kids had a “private party” a week earlier. Go Rebels!

How disgusting. I have never heard of Turner County so I'm going to imagine its out in the sticks. And no, not all of GA is like that or the south for that matter.

Finally, racism is dead in this country! Now can we all just forget about it? You know, since it no longer has any power or anything.

"This is history, baby, this is history," said Noriega McKeller, a 19-year-old senior. "Somebody had to do it. Why couldn't it be us?"

Yes, history. Welcome to it.

P.S. the Earth is round. It's science. Somebody had to do it.

this is normal...my High school did not have an intergrated prom until 1991...the same thing happened..we wanted to have a party with ALL the friends we grew up with...FYI it's not so much the kid...they're kids remember...they are ignorant to the fact...it's the parents that organize these things and the parents that let it happen...it takes a generation that is smart enough to realize it 2007 (1991 for me)...I could not believe it when I became a junior and found out that the proms were separate...but we changed everything... smile

I just googled and wiki-thanged Turner County, Georgia. Way high poverty. A page with a white hand holding up a watermellon slice, with a bite out of it, next to a link to some flag deal, which hot spot included 2, count'em, 2 Confederate battle flags. Just 10 seconds yielded that Turner was a rebel general. Am I surprised? Yes. I'm surprised that that county is so lame. But, see, the hand holding the watermellon slice was white, so that was not some statement about anything other than that watermellons grow their in such abundance that they can be had, an entire 20-pound mellon, for a nickel in August, and some folks just bust them over the edge of their jeep or truck and scoop out the inner heart of said watermellons - the deep red sweetest part, and discard the rest - out beyond the ring of seeds. Now, this county is so small you could almost fit them all in your house, everyone, of whatever race - which includes asians, native americans, and some cat called Ignatius the Wanderer. So, how in heaven could they do 2 proms? I didn't even go to my one prom, happily. I'm very glad they all cheered up recently, the youth there and changed things. But all this says to me is one thing.

It is time for a FESTIVAL there. A music and arts festival that celebrates the entire United States and the best aspects of southern culture, of which there are many.
Woodstock Deep South 2007 - a time for celebration and liberation.

Any takers? I'm tired. But I would show up.

Am I the only one that wants to start listening to some RATM?

But seriously, two towns over from where I grew-up, and the fact that we have to reference number of towns over I'll always find worrisome, they still don't allow dancing within the town, nor are young men and women allowed to sit on the same surface behind a closed door. The enforcement of this rule still perplexes me.

Vive le Kevin!
