Don’t know if you’ve heard this or not but the military is having a tough time right now. It seems a certain president started an idiotic war that has turned into a bit of a disaster. Some would call it a quagmire. We’ve now begun sending injured soldiers, men and women with PTSD, back into battle. Why? Because no one wants to fight in another country’s never-ending civil war. Oh, and the planning of the war appears to have been done by retards. So, what to do now? How about a draft!

Nice. I would enjoy a draft because I am too old to get the call and it would make me right. Before the war started I said it would result in the draft returning. David Cross said I was an idiot. But if it happens I would be right! I love being right, even if a lot of people have to die. Fuck you, David!

On Tuesday, The Senate Armed Services Committee heard testimony that the Army and Marine Corps are having severe personnel problems. Those problems may not be “resolved” and talk of a draft has begun to fill the ranks.

Former senior Pentagon personnel official Lawrence Korb broke it down.

“The current use of ground forces in Iraq represents a complete misuse of the all-volunteer military. The all-volunteer force was never designed for a protracted ground war, but that is exactly what it faces.”

“If the United States is going to have a significant component of its ground forces in Iraq over the next five, 10, 15 or 30 years, then the responsible course is for the president and those supporting this open-ended and escalated presence in Iraq to call for reinstating the draft.”

Oh no. Can you imagine in this day and age any politician with the balls to call for a draft? I think they would rather have the US invaded by China than take such an unpopular stance.

Sen. John Warner, R-Va., the former armed services committee chairman and former Navy secretary, said he cannot imagine a circumstance under which Congress would order a military draft.

“We must, at all cost, preserve the all-volunteer force,” Warner said.

Wow, how’s your battle with reality going? The all-volunteer force is fucked, plain and simple. Our military is being described as “broken.” We are already sending injured troops, soldiers without training and soldiers without proper equipment to war. Wake the fuck up, grandpa.

“For the first time since Vietnam, we are caught with no strategic reserve. We simply do not have a strategic fallback position for the crisis that will come inevitably,” retired Army General McCaffrey warned.

There is another option. Over the past 10 years the military has discharged 10,000 personnel because they were gay. 800 had skills that were deemed critical. Another option would be to “welcome” foreigners. If they fought for the US, they could gain citizenship. It would be just like Starship Troopers, except without the big spider things.

There is also a third option that no one is talking about. What if every asshole who gets on a message board to talk about how important the war is joined up and got their asses into battle? Come on, you fucking pussies. You supported this war. You wanted it. Shut the fuck up and go fight, your country needs you more than ever.

That’s what I thought. Pussy.

all true. But Charlie Rangle (NY-D) called for re-instatement of the draft in 2003, prior to the invasion and destrcution in Iraq. he said:

Those who love this country have a patriotic obligation to defend this country," Rangel said. "For those who say the poor fight better, I say give the rich a chance."

According to Rangel's office, minorities comprise more than 30 percent of the nation's military.

Under his bill, the draft would apply to men and women ages 18 to 26; exemptions would be granted to allow people to graduate from high school, but college students would have to serve.

Anyone who didn't qualify for military service because of impairments would be asked to perform community service.

The lawmaker has said his measure could make members of Congress more reluctant to authorize military action. The Korean War veteran has accused President Bush and some fellow lawmakers of being too eager to go to war.

Draft based armies are shit they dont work , look at European armies that are based on the draft. Poor attendance poor performance and generally bad attitude. All volunteer forces get much better retension rates of personal and much better performance. Whatever idiot is saying this has no idea about a modern military.
When I lived in Europe I knew an ex Itialian army sargent who would tell me about the fuck tard conscripts he had to baby sit each year, they didnt want to be there the Army didnt want them to be there so they spent 2 years of there life slacking off and stealling everything that wasnt nailed down to sell on the black market.
And anyway to train up a massive influx of raw recruits would gut the miltary down to even lower available personal now, a third of all senior experienced staff would have to be made available to train all the new people ... once you go all volunteer its almost pointless going back to conscripts.

i see the offering foreigners citizenship in exchange for service way before the draft. i heard awhile back that the current draft bill doesn't have a college loophole either, so no more shelter for the spawn of the wealthy (well, i'm sure they'd find one, but you know).

Conscription into an armed force to be forced to fight away from home has historically been a horrible Idea. If, if, IF a draft of any kind were to be accepted, the compromise would havta be National Guard service in your home area. You would be taught Disaster Response, Emergency relief, as well as fighting abilities. And rich college kids would still be able to attend classes and stay out of danger, which would make mommy and daddy happy.

Not that that would solve the current problem here, but it might minimize the mass exodus into Canada the current draft proposes. tongue

Don't need a draft when there's Stop-Loss
I have a friend whose ETS date is Sept this year, but he's leaving for Iraq again in May... for at least a year.
I believe that most of the nation is more worried about gas prices, American idol, the latest single from Fall Out Boy, or what new gadget Apple is releasing, than the U.S. citizens whoring out our volunteer military.

I won't really comment much on the main body of the article but i will say something. I am a 28 year old infantryman getting ready for my first deployment this summer and I am where I want to be. I was a college student before I enlisted and joined for my own reasons that I won't discuss here, but being in the military for almost a year now I have seen and heard a lot. Some soldiers join because they want to kill "Haj." some join because they have nothing else to get them bye in life and the infantry is the only job that they were qualified for (those soldiers are either the biggest shit-bags or the best future NCO's), some join because they are a part of a military family, some join because its what they always sincerely wanted to do, and the rest join for a whole other ton of reasons. We all volunteered, and chose the path we are on. Yeah, a lot of college students do have their head so far up their ass that they don't know whats going on in the world, but thats their choice, and I believe that it is their right to live like that. It's a complicated issue that most people do have an opinion on but sometimes having an opinion is the worst thing you can do for the situation at hand, especially if you are not proactive one way or another. I love my country but didn't join for patriotism or the need to want to kill a human being, but as long as people do volunteer, for whatever reason, be happy that it's not you that has to go and do our countries dirty work. Speak out against the war by all means, but support the soldier who is getting his hands dirty Because "when all is well, be thankful that we chose to go through hell." I, myself, am not even sure things will be well after all of this and I don't think a draft will be the best solution for a quality force. Rakkasan.

And according to the New York Times, a draft might solve the problem of young folks disproportionately supporting Bush and the war. Says one old-timer,

Jimmie Powell, 73, a bartender and factory worker from El Reno, Oklahoma, "I don't think younger people really know a whole lot about anything. They don't care because there is no draft. If there were a draft, we'd finally have the revolution we need."

And if the draft meant a less-functional, more European-like dysfunctional army... all the better.

My last post only saved in part (having ridiculous amounts of never-posted posts in the last couple weeks). Then the page wouldn't reload until there were 15 seconds left to edit.

So . . . once again, in re: _DictionaryGirl_'s These Colors don't Run story: I sawe the same logo on a rain-soaked T-Shirt and they wer running. The irony was thick, because it was at Roy Clark concert (yes, that's what I said; what OF it?wink) a month after 9/11 and the shirt-wearer was mouthing off about nuking all the "AY-rabs" and how that would fix everything. "Blow the Middle East off the map and the world'd be great!"

He had a marines cap on. I asked when he served. He said he'd never been in the military.

SPOILERS! (Click to view)
Come, you Masters of War
You that build all the guns
You that build the Death planes
You that build the big bombs
You that hide behind walls
You that hide behind desks
I just want you to know
I can see through your masks

You that never done nothing
But build to destroy
You play with my World
Like it's your little toy
You put a gun in my hand
And you hide from my eyes
Then you turn and run farther
When the fast bullets fly

Like Judas of old
You lie and deceive
"A world war can be won"
You want me to believe
But I see through your eyes
And I see through your brain
Like I see through the water
That runs down my drain

You fasten the triggers
For others to fire
Then you set back and watch
When the death count gets higher
You hide in your mansion
As young people's blood
Flows out of their bodies
And is buried in the mud

You've thrown the worst fear
That can ever be hurled -
Fear to bring children
Into the World
For threatening my baby,
Unborn and unnamed -
You ain't worth the blood
That runs in your veins

How much do I know
To talk out of turn?
You might say that I'm young
You might say I'm unlearned
But there's one thing I know
Though I'm younger than you -
Even Jesus would never
Forgive what you do

Let me ask you one question
Is your money that good?
Will it buy you forgiveness?
Do you think that it could?
I think you will find
When your Death takes its toll -
All the money you made
Will never buy back your soul

And I hope that you die
And your Death'll come soon
I will follow your casket
In the pale afternoon
And I'll watch while you're lowered
Down to your Death Bed
And I'll stand over your grave
'Till I'm sure that you're dead

no, no, thats not it, i dont think...

i thought that i had heard that they had extended the maximum entry age for soldiars a couple of years ago, in advance of a draft.

but my question stands, what IS the max age for entry into the armed forces be?

This seems appropos as well as the other song:

While digesting Reader's Digest
In the back of a dirty book store,
A plastic flag, with gum on the back,
Fell out on the floor.
Well, I picked it up and I ran outside
Slapped it on my window shield,
And if I could see old Betsy Ross
I'd tell her how good I feel.

Chorus:
But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
They're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.

Well, I went to the bank this morning
And the cashier he said to me,
"If you join the Christmas club
We'll give you ten of them flags for free."
Well, I didn't mess around a bit
I took him up on what he said.
And I stuck them stickers all over my car
And one on my wife's forehead.

Repeat Chorus:

Well, I got my window shield so filled
With flags I couldn't see.
So, I ran the car upside a curb
And right into a tree.
By the time they got a doctor down
I was already dead.
And I'll never understand why the man
Standing in the Pearly Gates said...

"But your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more.
We're already overcrowded
From your dirty little war.
Now Jesus don't like killin'
No matter what the reason's for,
And your flag decal won't get you
Into Heaven any more."

This makes me severely angry. Not because of any feelings for or against the war . . . personally, I "support" the war mostly because we're there and there's nothing we can do about that . . . and I believe that the consequences of leaving are a whole hell of a lot worse than staying and "finishing," though I won't be so naive as to specify and endstate. That's Gen Petraeus' and Pres Bush's job.

But look at what you just said. Those "younger people who don't know a lot about anything?" Hi there, poster child! I don't know how old you are, but you sure just showed how little you know about the terrible, brutal nature of humanity today. a "dysfunctional army" is a GOOD thing for you? I don't care where on the political spectrum you are - it has taken 231 years of American casualties in innumerable wars, or ALL kinds - not just the "imperialist" ones - to give you the right to say dumbfuck things like that. Did you learn nothing from Srebrenice? Rwanda? Warsaw 1944? Those who cannot use force effectively are SLAUGHTERED by those who can - and have the will to kill the innocent.

Say whatever you want about our current war, but realize that the incredible power of our military is the ultimate guarantor of the right to LIVE, much less all those other freedoms in the Constitution. an incompetent military as a goal? sheesh. I hope Darwin gets you before some other gullible idiots start listening to you . . .
