Normally student protests against the Bush administration would be about as noteworthy as a soy bean crop report. But when the school’s undergraduate population is predominantly Republican and possibly the biggest collection of squares on planet earth, it’s, well, hilarious.

Mormon factory Brigham Young University invited Dick Cheney to be their commencement speaker, and when word got out, a mess of students and alumni got their magic underwear all in a bunch. Using the harshest language available, students assailed Cheney as a “morally dubious man," whose presence could challenge “the morality and integrity” of the school.

The school isn’t backing down, and the students have taken their message to the streets. And judging from news reports, they’ve done so with extreme, unwarranted politeness and prim attitudes.

I love the picture of the protesting students in this article. First, you have the twerp in the tie holding the too long anti-Cheney sign, indicating that unlike protests on other college campuses, there were no legalize weed pamphlets or drum circles. Then you’ve got homeboy’s “Cheney is killing our Troops” sign, with a perfectly placed white spot on the second “o” in “troops” that had me thinking it was a “u.” For a second, the sign was a letter “e” away from a 30 Rock Gag.

But the best is the small sign held near the center of the picture, which reads “Cheney said to Senator Leahy… Go ___ yourself.” The expletive (which is, incidentally, “fuck”) is covered by a small sign that I think says “inappropriate.” As the article states, the students were object not only by the Vice President’s policies, but also by his character; they’re appalled that Cheney used a cuss word on the Senate floor. Three years ago.

Evidently, for these Mormon students, a single swear word is the most troubling aspects of Cheney’s seven years as Vice President, outracing the Iraq war or even that whole shooting a guy in the face thing.

Are you saying you're a Mormon? And you're on this site? Am I the only one who is smelling some major hypocrisy here? If you really are Mormon, how can you possibly complain about people "making fun" of your religion when you yourself don't even seem to follow it?

Oh, this is hilarious! Being the only person in my extended family who isn't Mormon, I had visions of my sister and parents at a protest. That would be damned bizarre!!! I've been to many protest over the years and not once have I thought "Geee, I wonder if I'll run into any of my family here". I just might have to start looking around now...

"Evidently," huh? I actually don't see any evidence of that whatsoever. I see evidence that one kid made one sign referencing that incident. In fact, every single other sign I can see in that picture refers precisely to things like the Iraq war and the War on Terror.

I'm not a fan of this article. If you've got something to say about what the BYU students are actually doing here or the points they're actually trying to make, say it, and leave out the crap like, "He's wearing a tie! There's a white spot on his sign! OMG, Mormons hate swearing? How dumb!"

First of all, it's really not your business how she follows her religion or what she believes. Secondly, it doesn't matter what religion anyone is in the first place: they can still see when someone's being a jerk and not be a fan of that. I don't have to be Mormon to think that this article was needlessly and nonsensically derogatory of people's religious beliefs (especially since the actual news story had almost nothing to do with religious beliefs, aside from the fact that the protest took place at a notably religious institution--the points the students were making had pretty much nothing to do with the students being Mormon).

I don't know. I think the student's faith and beliefs have quite a lot to do with the protest, and its nature. From the protestor picture article:

"The problem is this is a morally dubious man," said Andrew Christensen, a 22-year-old Republican from Salt Lake City. "It's challenging the morality and integrity of this institution."

Students and faculty at Brigham Young -- a private university sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints -- are expected to adhere to an honor code, which emphasizes "being honest, living a chaste and virtuous life, abstaining from alcohol and tobacco, using clean language" and following church doctrines.

And the original reporter considered the following noteworthy enough to mention:

Some of the faculty and the 28,000 undergraduate and graduate students, who are overwhelmingly Republican, have expressed concern about the Bush administration's support for the war in Iraq and other policies, but most of the protest has focused on Cheney's integrity, character and behavior. Several students said, for example, that they were appalled at Cheney's use of an expletive on the Senate floor in a June 2004 exchange with Sen. Patrick J. Leahy, D-Vt.

Whether or not this is the major focus of the protest is a separate question, but I don't think there's much doubt that the original reporter felt the senate "fuck you" incident was a recurring theme among the objections.

I think you've got a kneejerk reaction to this article. Let's break it down:

the biggest collection of squares on planet earth

Gentle ribbing at worst. And let's face it, the BYU honor code forbids drugs, alcohol, sex, and provocative clothing. I think BYU students would react with "Square and proud of it."

Mormon factory Brigham Young University

Not very funny, not very accurate (they're mostly Mormons when they get there) but not very offensive.

I don't get that.

Using the harshest language available, students assailed Cheney as a "morally dubious man," whose presence could challenge "the morality and integrity" of the school.

A fairly pleasant representation, actually.

While that's a bit of a misrepresentation of the article, it's just a the author being cutesy.

All in all, I don't think johnnyfu went anywhere near as far as, say, FeartheReaper might. I'd call this article pretty tame, actually.

Tame as a Mormon frat party. wink

And everyone's religion gets made fun of on this site. Why should yrs be any different?

He was taking that out of context to be funny. Not unlike what the Daily Show does all the time. Though it is more effective on TV when you don't have immediate access to the rest of the clip.
