RABAT (Reuters) - A court in Casablanca on Thursday handed out prison sentences ranging from one month to one year to 14 heavy metal music enthusiasts, the official MAP news agency reported.

The trial followed articles in some newspapers which described the accused as "Satanists" who recruited for an international cult of devil-worship.

The 14 men aged between 22 and 35 years were found guilty of "possessing objects which infringe morals" and of "acts capable of undermining the faith of a Muslim."

Morocco's penal code allows a maximum sentence of three years for attempting to convert a Muslim to another faith. Nine of those sentenced are musicians in three Moroccan heavy metal groups: Nekros, Infected Brain and Reborn.

Parents, friends and college supervisors of those sentenced had argued that the case arose from a misunderstanding of the heavy metal sub-culture and should never have come to court.

Soumayah Kortbi, whose 31-year-old brother Ayoub Kortbi was sentenced to three months, said, "I am disappointed with justice in my country. It is as though the court did not take the trouble to find out the facts."

The French-language weekly magazine TelQuel had ridiculed the judge's remarks during the trial that "Normal people go to concerts in a suit and tie," rather than in a black T-shirt with heavy-metal symbols which was shown to the court.

The judge also found suspicious the fact that one of the musicians chose to pen lyrics in English rather than Arabic. Journalist Nourredine Ben Malik, whose sensationalist interview with 21-year-old girl involved in the heavy metal scene in the weekly As-Sahifa last July helped trigger the police enquiry, was contrite following the sentencing. "I am against these sentences," he told Reuters.

"There was no solid argument behind them, and I've signed a petition saying as much.

"These are just young people who like a certain kind of music. If there is a problem with their thinking it is not a matter for the courts but for their families, political parties and society."

For some of Morocco's francophone middle classes, the case set alarm bells ringing, against a background of rising electoral support for Morocco's Islamist Justice and Development Party (PJD).

In legislative elections last September, the PJD emerged as the third largest party in parliament, and it looks set likewise to gain ground in local elections in June.

PJD member of parliament Mustapha Ramid on January 23, before the trial began, asked parliament to have a concert by the three heavy metal groups banned. The following month he criticized European and U.S. cultural centers operating in Rabat and Casablanca.

Driss Ksikes, chief editor at TelQuel magazine, said that with this verdict, "Morocco's young people will not feel at home in their own country. I think our judicial system needs psychologists if they don't understand that young people are by essence subversive and like to shock."

Does anything suck more than Western monothesism you mean. You would be hard pressed to find Buddhists engaged in this sort of intolerance, or Hindus, or Wiccans...

Actually according to strict Islamic law leaving the Muslim religion is punishable by death. These guys are lucky that Morocco is so progressive.

I think there is plenty of evidence that Buddhists and Hindus can be intolerant. Ever heard of Sri Lanka where the buddists stripped Muslisms of all rights some 15 years ago. And then people in the west wonder why the muslims blow things up. As for Hindus, do you really think that Hindus are particularly toleratant muslims or any of the other 876 ethnic groups living in subcontinent? Mobs of HIndu nationalist brown shirts march the streets New Dehli calling for the killing of muslims. Every time a good film is produced by an indian director, angry hindus destroy the theatre and riot, demanding that everyone responsible for the film be killed. And if you think the development policies of the Indian government in any way reflect a respect for other ethnic groups, you live in a fantasy world. Go read, "the cost of living" by Arundhati Roy.

Point taken.

I just hate to see people condem religion universally. ANYTHING can be used as a basis for intolerance, even style and music.

Oh, I think Hindus are quite capable of religious intolerance. Just look at what recently happened in Gujarat state in India.

Now, you see, this is why voodoo is awesome. You've got Gran Met, the Big Guy in the Sky, presiding over everything. But he can't be troubled by the fact that you can't get laid, or that your sister's husband is cheating, or that your cousin can't find work. That's what the loa are for, man, and the Catholic saints, to some extent.

It's the religion of getting things DONE. You do what you can, your ancestors do what they can, the loa do what they can, and Gran Met keeps order over all.

biggrin

(and no, voodoo isn't voodoo dolls and black magic love spells and zombiis. seriously)

Umm, tell that to the several thousand Muslims who were murdered in Gujarat last year by Hindu mobs. And I've met quite a few remarkably intolerant Buddhists and Wiccans in my time; none of them have been in a position to do much except make me laugh, but that's a matter of circumstance rather than inclination.

You're entirely correct. And the fact is that Western monotheism, even in its most fanatical forms, really isn't as all bad as some of its practitioners are. The modern concept of popular sovereignty (by the people, for the people, etc) derives from the theological beliefs of one John Knox, a fanatical Scottish Calvanist preacher and the father of Presbyterianism.

I know! All those Iron Maiden shirts, poodle perms, *shudder*

Anyway, I'm proud to be agnostic. By not knowing, or caring about gods, goddesses, or anything else spiritualistic, I find have a lot more time for other things.

Haven't read Power POlitics but The God of Small Things is one of the few books I've read that's so good I have to make myself stop reading it so I can eat and breathe normally. Amazing rich imagery and the ending, the way the whole book is structured is so audacious but so right. Perfect. I want to have her babies.

Boring serious point: I'm disappointed in Morocco. When I was there I got the impression it was a pretty admirable and free place despite having a monarchy and being big on religion. And with great tea. Maybe that blinded me.
