The Vice President of the United States, it is now clear, is fucking psychotic and badly in need of medication.

Apr 6, 6:51 AM (ET)
WASHINGTON (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertions of al-Qaida links to Saddam Hussein's Iraq on Thursday as the Defense Department released a report citing more evidence that the prewar government did not cooperate with the terrorist group.

Cheney contended that al-Qaida was operating in Iraq before the March 2003 invasion led by U.S. forces and that terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was leading the Iraqi branch of al-Qaida. Others in al-Qaida planned the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"He took up residence there before we ever launched into Iraq, organized the al-Qaida operations inside Iraq before we even arrived on the scene and then, of course, led the charge for Iraq until we killed him last June," Cheney told radio host Rush Limbaugh during an interview. "As I say, they were present before we invaded Iraq."

However, a declassified Pentagon report released Thursday said that interrogations of the deposed Iraqi leader and two of his former aides as well as seized Iraqi documents confirmed that the terrorist organization and the Saddam government were not working together before the invasion.

The Sept. 11 Commission's 2004 report also found no evidence of a collaborative relationship between Saddam and Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida network during that period.

When people talk to me about impeaching George Bush it sends a shiver up my spine, since what we would be left with is this loon running the country. Sad to say it, but Bush is the only sane option.

That is scarily true. I think most of what Bush has done is ludicrous, but I *get* it: he has something like an ideology - some set of ideals - that he's pursuing. Hell, even in abstract ("democracy," "morality") these aren't *bad* ideals. He's just doing them really shittily. But at least it makes some kind of sense. The megalomaniacal, deluded VP *is* the really scary one.

There is no functional reason why Cheney couldn't be impeached right alongside Bush. He has been intimately involved in every potentially impeachable offense by the president, and has also got some doozies all his own.

The only sane option is to get rid of both of 'em.

So, how is it that he can get away, politically, with directly contradicting the government experts on this?

This side of the pond, there'd be resignations.

We already had our accountability moment.

Not necessarily at Cheney's level, of course; it might be the experts who "take early retirement", or "quit to spend more time with their families".

At some point in the latter half of the 20th century, "falling on your sword" in American national politics turned into (at most) making a public mea culpa then going on about your business. And then you earned the right to become offended at anyone who brought it up after you "apologized."

Unless you were made a scapegoat by your superiors - and Cheney doesn't have any.

That's the thing. It's Cheney's enemies (and a handful of fallguys) who've done that, starting with Powell back in '04. Administrative infighting and a political culture of blind loyalty demanded by this administration has effectively precluded any genuine accountability from taking place. These guys concentrate on winning elections virtually to the exclusion of governing.

The accountability situation might change now that the opposition controls the legislature, but it'll be hard going with such a slim majority (which, of course, represents a much more substantial majority of voters, but because of the way seats are geographically apportioned in the United States, the liberal presence in the legislature is severely diminished).

Nah, right thread. If we had let Tecumseh take Michigan as promised in 1812 than Britain might well have had a spear-head with which to take back the Northern states. The South would have created their own confederacy, George Bush and Dick Cheney might well be leaders of the christian-facist Confederacy of Texas, but they would be kept well in line by their more moderate, and much bigger Northern neighbors.
Blame Canada.

Don't make me come up there and give you the what-for, Canada-boy. Whenever you're finished hiding in Australia, that is.

Nah. In the moderate Dominion of British North America all hot chicks would be given immediate residency upon entry.
