I'm lost

APR 02, 2007 12:15 PM

First, let me address the cunty comment. I know for a fact that Dianne Feinstein is a cunt because I have met her personally and there is no other word that could possibly describe her. I met her nearly fifteen years on the Hill. She could not have been more dismissive and mean to me, a California resident. Moments later I bumped into Barbara Boxer in the hallway and she invited me into her office for a chat. Those are my Senators. One is a twunt and the other is a nice lady.

Now, onto the war profiteer part of the story. (Though I must say here that if you are a war profiteer, then you are automatically a cunt.)

Feinstein has been a huge cheerleader for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. She is also incredibly rich, with an estimated wealth of $40 million. Turns out she is incredibly wealthy because of the wars.

The Military Construction Appropriations Subcommittee decides which military construction projects will be funded from a roster proposed by the Department of Defense. Contracts are then awarded to defense contractors. Last week, Feinstein abruptly walked away from her seat on the subcommittee after a report in the Metro Silicon Valley linked her votes to financial profits of her husband’s companies. The companies received billions of dollars worth of military contracts that were approved by Feinstein.

Her husband is Richard Blum, a wealthy businessman, philanthropist and behind-the-scenes political advisor. He recently took over as chairman of the University of California Board of Regents. He has a massive investment empire, including military contractors URS Corporation and Perini Corporation, as well as a real estate company CB Richard Ellis. When Blum bought a controlling share of Perini, he put his friend Michael Klein on the board of directors to represent his interest.

In September, Klein stated that, beginning in 1997, he routinely informed Feinstein about specific federal projects coming before her in which Perini had a stake. The insider information, Klein said, was intended to help the senator avoid conflicts of interest.

So much for that theory, Feinstein continued to act on legislation that affected Perini and URS. That means she was getting information she should not have been getting, deciding how money was distributed based on that information and profiting from that distribution. She also lobbied for an increase in the budget for the cleanup of military bases. From 2000 to 2005, URS was paid $204 million for cleaning up McClellan Air Force Base.

In 2005, her husband sold his shares of Perini and URS and suddenly, Feinstein started calling for and end to the Iraq war. What a fucking shock!

But the good news is that Feinstein is the newly appointed chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, which regulates the ethical behavior of Senators. Since Democrats are now running Congress, expect nothing to happen. I would prefer she was sent to prison. A male prison.

i'm not surprised in the least. out of curiosity, what does one have to do to get the label 'philanthropist' added to one's name?

Isn't it also true that thought she proclaims herself to be anti-gun and votes that way she in fact not only has a CCW but carries a LadySmith in her purse.

I don't think she'd have anything to worry about in a male prison.

My representatives have a poor track record. Duke Cunningham (congressional district I grew up in), and Feinstein, and I'm certain a few others.

Not that most of us expect politicians to be really tidy with contributions or business associations. But it would be (selfishly) nice to be hearing about the guy from another state in the news....

Both true. It fell out at Democratic convention once. She's one of those people who believes no one should have guns...unless they're rich, of course.

I am begining to wonder about democracy in the face of all these corruptions that are occurring. Being in Rome at the end of the era had to feel uncomfortable and bad too.

Why are there so many geriatric politicians in the United States congress?

Don't people realize that when someone is in politics for decades that they are probably on the take?

They see the grim reaper approaching and they say, "Fuck the people. I need to get comfortable in my retirement."

We need some new blood in Washington!

You don't become chair of a subcommittee or learn to manipulate the budget to the benefit of yr district yr first term. It's to the benefit of both the party and the individual districts to keep incumbents incumbent.

Except when the "incumbent" no longer represents the people of that district.

I was kinda hoping you were lobbying something or protesting something else. What, I dunno.

The guy-pushing-no-agenda scenario's pretty much better all around for an objective comparison, though.

Not that it's entirely justifiable, but as I understand it she had the concealed weapon permit while she was mayor of San Francisco, and being that she's the only woman who held that office (and that there are still some crazies out there), she might have felt the need for extra protection.

It's not like she's waltzing around the senate packing heat.
