Mexico may be joining the fetus killing nations of the world, or at least Mexico City. Yesterday, lawmakers in the capitol began hearings on a proposal to legalize abortion. A vote is scheduled in mid-April and if all goes according to plan, fetuses will be dying by the millions.

Mexico is largely a Roman Catholic nation and many people are horrified by the idea of legalized abortions, but Mexico City is far more liberal than the rest of the country. Protest groups have taken to the streets, organizing marches and rallies. They claim the proposal is the work of “feminists” who support “a culture of death.”

The conservative National Action Party is in control in Mexico, but the more liberal Democratic Revolution Party is in charge of Mexico City. The PRD ran on a pro-choice platform and the party is now rewarding its supporters, with sweet, sweet abortion.

Currently, women who have an abortion can receive up to three years in prison in Mexico City and doctors can be sent to prison for up to 10 years. The crime is rarely charged. It is estimated that 1 million illegal abortions are performed in Mexico every year.

Botched abortions are the fifth-leading cause of death for women in Mexico and the third-leading cause in Mexico City, she said.

According to studies here, about 2,000 to 3,000 Mexican women die every year of complications from illegal abortions.

If the law is passed, anti-abortion activists hope to persuade doctors and nurses to use “civil disobedience” and not perform the procedure.

"Unfortunately, there will always be killer doctors who lend themselves to these operations," he said. "But we're sure the majority will be with us because not everyone has a criminal mentality."

Aw, ain’t that sweet?

Sometimes I'm surprised when reminded that a lot of countries (not necessarily Mexico) that are considered more liberal than ours have very restricted abortion policies. My sister toured an abortion boat when she was in Amsterdam, as part of her social work class.

I don't give a shit about what u're thinking. If you don't want to understand why abortion can be a second choice for women I can't help you.

Women will have abortions whether they're illegal or not, as they have for centuries. At least with proper medical facillities the chance of septic infection or some other such lovely outcome is drastically reduced, plus information can be provided to prevent future unwanted pregnancies. I find it amazing that U.S. anti-choicers can preach about a culture of life in a country without universal health coverage.

Freedom from religion and laws passed based on ancient religious texts makes a nation open-minded and fair.

One abortion law does not an enlightenment make. Talk to me when they fix their economy and people don't starve when the price of tortillas rise.

Haha @ Conservative abortion opponents. Conservatives, who say the government has no right in people's homes, who say the government is too big, too far-reaching, those principles of Reaganomics...

And yet, they're all in favor of the government deciding for women whether they can or cannot have children.

This is an era where the Pill isn't covered by insurance, but Viagra is, and yet abortions are shunned.

ABORTIONS WILL HAPPEN. THEY WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN. NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY OR THINK, THEY WILL HAPPEN.

The least you can do is give women a choice. This is not a fascism. People have choices.

Besides, an acorn is not a tree, and two undeveloped cells are not an infant.

And then there's rape.

And then there's incest.

Etc etc etc.

We have no right to dictate to women that they must have children. If anything, abortion has kept the population boom under control. Can you imagine if Roe v Wade had never occurred? The population of the United States could be 350, 400 million people. That's a lot of resources down the drain.

But the only argument abortion opponents can bring to the table is either of God or morality, two things that do not apply equally to all people, whereas the laws of nature do.

And consider this:

If the United States bans abotion: if I was to create a religion that claimed that abortions were perfectly all right, and even licensed doctors to perform them under a title of that religion, then by Constitutional law, the government would have to let those abortions take place. It's been done with drugs and other "illegal" acts, so it would make sense to be allowed here.

Unless you want to ban the First Amendment altogether in order to prevent something like this from happening?

There are so many well-developed arguments for abortion, and so few against them. Abortion opponents are reduced to holding gruesome, bloody signs showing dead fetuses from thirty years ago with their children in order to attempt to prove their point.

Oh, and committing acts of terrorism. Can't forget about that.

you know, i agree with you on almost everything you say. true, the government has no business in people's homes, therefore i don't believe abortion should be illegal. however, i do believe that to have an abortion is terrible. also, two undeveloped cells are certainly not an infant, but, at what point can we agree that those cells are an infant? my daughter was born 5 weeks premature but completely healthy, was she an infant? 3 weeks before that? when?
oh yeah, incest and rape? c'mon, that is such a small percentage of all pregnancies that is statistically as close to zero as you can get. and about broken condoms, i've seen condoms fit easily over a thirteen inch cucumber...they don't just break.
