Burger King will be favoring suppliers of eggs that grow their chickens cage-free, and suppliers of pork that allow sows to move, a report in the New York Times says.

They will also be favoring suppliers that use "controlled-atmospheric stunning", aka gusts of wind, to knock chickens out before they're slaughtered. No, just kidding, that's a euphemism for knocking them unconscious with CO2. However, the CO2 method IS considered more humane than shocking them unconscious, which is the method currently widespread. (Who thought that would be less painful than just getting your head chopped off? Tasered and killed, or just killed? I'd prefer killed.)

The goal for the next few months, Burger King said is for 2 percent of its eggs to be "cage free," and for 10 percent of its pork to come from farms that allow sows to move around inside pens, rather than being confined to crates.

That number will increase as costs come down and, hopefully, as the move puts pressure on these industries to change their practices.

Why? Here's what a spokesperson for BK had to say:

"Like a hockey player, we want to be there before the puck gets there."

I had to quote that out of context, because it's so awesome. The context is that BK sees preferences for more humanely raised meat emerging, and wants to stay ahead of the game, rather than losing market-share and operating reactively.

Okay, cool. It's a step in the right direction.

(edit: Moderators, I have no idea if this should go in CE or Lifestyle, so feel free to move it.)

exactly. it's not great, but at least SOME efforts are being made to support the suppliers who don't viciously abuse their animals.

i'm trying desperately to be optomistic here. is it working?

Me too. I'm actually impressed that some of these chains are doing ANYTHING. Is it really affecting business that much, or is BK really trying to beat the "puck"?

No sabia bean. I bet I didn't read a sticky...

you're trying to drive me insane, when i clicked on the link it said NEWS:, when the page opened the NEWS: went away, and i sat here for a moment trying to figure out if i was hallucinating again.

I bet there is an increase in the number of people that follow a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle due to things like learning how a slaughterhouse actually works being more available.

I did some environmental testing for a slaughterhouse, i got to see first hand how it operates and it actually turned me off meat for quite some time, but the problem is, i like meat so i started eating it again, just not in the quantities i was prior to that. I am all for any company that can make it as pain free for the animal as possible, as hypocritical as that sounds.

baby steps. baaaaby steps. i r'd tfa and it turns out that there were no adjustments to their sources of beef because they already had standards in place for it.

hopefully concern for animal welfare will trickle down slowly and actually find some traction in the minds of average north americans -- it was disheartening to read:

He said the company would not use the animal welfare initiatives in its marketing. "I don't think it's something that goes to our core business," Mr. Grover said.

i know right? giving animals some basic measure of respect is totally for pussies.

Wasn't Mc'Donalds considered a leader in this a few years back? They didn't seem shy about it. Or was that much ado about nothing?

Listen up, brothers and sisters
Come hear my desperate tale
I speak of our friends of nature
Trapped in the dirt like a jail

Vegetables live in oppression
Served on our tables each night
This killing of veggies is madness
I say we take up the fight

Salads are only for murderers
Cole slaw's a fascist regime
Don't think that they don't have feelings
Just 'cause a radish can't scream

{Refrain}
I've heard the screams of the vegetables, scream scream scream
Watching their skins being peeled, having their insides revealed
Grated and steamed with no mercy, burning off calories
How do you think that feels, bet it hurts really bad
Carrot juice constitutes murder, and that's a real crime
Greenhouses prisons for slaves, let my vegetables grow
It's time to stop all this gardening, it's dirty as hell
Let's call a spade a spade, it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade

I saw a man eating celery
So I beat him black and blue
If he ever touches a sprout again
I'll bite him clean in two

I'm a political prisoner
Trapped in a windowless cage
'Cause I stopped the slaughter of turnips
By killing five men in a rage

I told the judge when he sentenced me
"This is my finest hour
I'll kill those farmers again
Just to save one more cauliflower"

{Refrain}

How low as people do we dare to stoop
Making young broccolis bleed in the soup
Untie your beans, uncage your tomatoes
Set potted plants free, don't mash that potato, ah

I've heard the screams of the vegetables scream scream scream
Watching their skins being peeled fates in the stir fry are sealed
Grated and steamed with no mercy you fat gourmet scum
How do you think that feels leave them out in the fields
Carrot juice constitutes murder V8's genocide
Greenhouses prisons for slaves yes your compost's a grave
It's time to stop all this gardening take up macramé
Let's call a spade a spade it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade

McD's and PETA disagree slightly on just what standard their animal welfare practices live up to. to their credit, they were the first fast food giant to even bother with animal welfare -- burger king followed and wendy's was actually a hold-out for a long time.
