I'm lost

MAR 03, 2007 12:55 PM

A Florida state legislator wants to ban the term "illegal alien" from official state documents. Democratic Senator Frederica Wilson of Miami has introduced a bill that would make it illegal for a state agency or official to use the term “illegal alien” in government documents, although there would be no punishment for a violation.

"I personally find the word 'alien' offensive when applied to individuals, especially to children," said Sen. Frederica Wilson, D-Miami. "An alien to me is someone from out of space."

Or outer space. But then again, I haven’t met many people from outer space or out of space, so maybe I’m not the best person to comment.

Here’s something called a “definition,” which I found in something called a “dictionary.”

Alien:
adjective
1) Coming from a different country, race, or group; foreign:
noun
1) A foreigner, usually someone who lives in a country of which they are not a legal citizen:

Maybe it would be better for Wilson to talk to the people who make dictionaries and ask them to change the definition of the word “alien.” But no, let's change thousands of state documents and waste tons of money and paper.

Instead of “alien” she wants the government to use the world “immigrant.” Surprisingly, Wilson says she does not mind the word “illegal,” although she does prefer “undocumented.” So, if Wilson gets what she wants, “illegal aliens” will henceforth be called, “undocumented immigrants.” Either way, I need my lawn cut.

I think this country as a whole has forgotten what the term 'illegal alien' means.

Awesome.
It's the "alien" part she doesn't like.

I call bullshit. Sounds like Representative "Wilson" (what the hell kind of name is that anyways? doesn't sound very American to me) just wants to make it easier for out of space travellers to reside here undocumented in the future.

Hey, Senator! I've got a great idea: instead of attempting to solve any problems, why don't we just argue over what to call things? That way you can receive your salary without performing any useful work at all!

This sort of crap is why Fark has a special "Florida" tag.

what about all the thousands of people who have become citizens legally?
all the indivuduals who sneak in and suck off the system (which is broken and corrupted) and those who defend them ought to be removed one way or another.
this situation will be the undoing of this society. check out the fall of the roman empire. it's the same thing all over again. 'those who don't know or understand history are DOOMED TO REPEAT IT'

So what you're saying is that the Roman Empire fell to invasion by space aliens. Good to know.

While I agree with her on the "undocumented" bit (as the term "illegal" in this context is not technically correct), the alien part is ridiculous.

Actually illegal is exactly the right term. Since it is against the law to enter the US without documentation.

To anyone making a fuss about how she's doing this so she doesn't actually have to be productive or do her job or whatever, read the article:

She said she encountered the situation when trying to pass a bill allowing children of foreigners to get in-state tuition at colleges and universities. Wilson, who directs a dropout prevention and education program in Miami, said she politely asks witnesses at public hearings on such issues not to use the term.

That sounds like work to me. "But they're illegal we shouldn't have to educate them." Better they get an education and enter the workforce then run around committing crime to support themselves and their families.

Also, her attempt to redefine the terminology is pretty smart. One term indicates they have no right to be here, her terminology would suggest that they do have a right to be in the country--similarly not making it a waste of her time, if that's something she feels strongly about. Remember, her district is home to thousands of "undocumented Caribbean immigrants".

I'm not sure that's necessarily true. She could just intend to use her terminology in any future legal work/legislation/whatever... I think the mental picture of thousands of state employees wasting thousands of man hours pouring over legal work erasing the word alien is a tad misleading.

What you're talking about is illegal immigration. The immigrant himself is not "illegal".

It doesn't really bother me either way, I'm just saying.

Maybe we should call them "illegally immigrating foreigners from out of space."

Tis is mostly over-zealous hyper-liberals that cannot see the severe problems economically, culturally, etc. that this is going to cause in the not so distant future. While I'm Democratic on most voting decisions, this is one I side with the [old] GOP on. It is a situation unfair to those born here, and those who work hard to legally come here.

Either way mind if I use it to replace Zombie molester as my occupation. Have to ask so I don't get sued, well not that you would be able to get much from me.

History. And what exactly do you mean when you say, "those who defend them ought to be removed one way or another?"

I'll just step forward and label myself a "defender of them." How do you propose to remove me, Mr. History Professor?

I swear to fuck, members of Congress push stupid legislation just for some attention. Instead of this stupidity, maybe you should spend some time reading the bills that you delegate to some pion who then tells you how to vote.

I think we are beyond PC and well into a black hole of hyper-sensitivity that is so ludacris and ridiculous no one will escape.

*Cue "God Bless America"*

It's ashame neither party can get America out of the current state of affairs, only continue the downward spiral until we are no longer a nation, and the only answer the majority of American's can come up with is voting for the opposite party of whoever is in power at the time, which is no better and has no viable solutions. The candidates each pick keep getting worse and worse, and we keep voting and voting, giving them no reason to improve.
