In another example of how George Bush is the worst president in the history of the United States, UK authorities revealed that suspected terrorists evaded capture because the United States interfered in an investigation. In August, MI5 and Scotland Yard were looking into a terrorist plot to blow up 10 airliners over the Atlantic. But political desires and a lust for headlines caused the White House to push for arrests. An arrest came too soon and the terrorists were allowed to escape.

US authorities put pressure on Pakistan authorities to apprehend Rashid Rauf, who was linked to the plot. He was picked up on August 9th. This arrest forced British police to rush plans, which allowed a second group of terrorists associated with the plot to escape.

The operation was one of the largest undertaken by the police and MI5, yet two counter-terrorism sources suggested that the intervention of the Americans was due to "inexperience and naivety" and that they were after a "short-term success".

Why would the US take such stupid action? Because Joe Lieberman had just been defeated in the Democratic Connecticut Senatorial primary and the White House wanted to send a message to the Democratic masses that they were weak on terrorism. As usual, the White House put political opportunism above the safety of our country.

This is probably one of the most retarded "news" stories ever.

First of all, it's from the Independent. Second, as much as I think Bush is retarded, I don't see how he's liable in this story.

Also, from the actual story:

An investigation by MI5 and Scotland Yard into an alleged plan to smuggle explosive devices on up to 10 passenger jets was jeopardised in August, when the US put pressure on authorities in Pakistan to arrest a suspect allegedly linked to the airliner plot.

So according to the Independent, they have three or four officers in the entire task force who had to "give up the current pursuit" to focus on a threat in Pakistan? Heh. Fucking funny.

Since when does the U.S. dictate the UK's assignments?

I wonder if they're going to run this story in The Enquirer next.

Reaper I believe you are letting your disdain for the ignorant cloud your judgment. One must be careful not to hate something so much that one becomes it.

Your other commentary on the Iraq war may have helped you air out your anger but it only serves to add more BS to an already BS laden topic. Now is not the time for theories on what may have been, now is the time for answers on what will be now. So I would like to see you tackle the topic of where America is to go from this point. Yes those responsible for their actions should be held accountable, but how do we "win" this war we are in now?
Do you see a diplomatic way out? I think it's safe to agree that pulling the troops out will cause a bitter crusade against the evil Christian west. With that said, do you feel an increase in troops and a better plan of attack will pay off in the long run or will there still be a retaliation from any surviving forces?

That is the kind of commentary I would like to see, that is what the American people need right now. Now is not the time to cry about it, now is the time for solutions.

What has that to do with anything?

I tend to agree with that.

What? I didn't understand that. Where in the story does it talk about three or four officers?

Since when does the U.S. dictate the UK's assignments?

Where does it say it does? And what is the UK to do if the US pre-empts UK operations, which seems to be the meat of the story?

I think we need both. Bitching and moaning keeps the problems fresh in the minds of a public with very short attention span and very short memory. It serves an important purpose.

people who say "GWB is the worst president ever" sound like idiots. I'll bet money that whoever wrote this piece can't even name 30 of the Presidents, much less all of them, much less rank them accurately. Almost anyone would rank Jimmy Carter as the worst President of the last 50 years, for instance

not defending GWB, its just a pet peeve of mine

I think that is awfully petty, mean and cruel - to do that to Affy. I didn't know you had that much power. Where is it written that everyone has to agree with you? And for someone who does what you do, you're awfully thin skinned - or maybe egotistical?
While you're at it, why don't you find some reason to kick me out. If that's the way SG is, maybe I don't want to be part of it. And here I was thinking SG was my favorite site, even though I don't always agree with everyone's opinions. In your own way, you're as bad as the people you criticize.

You're a sad person. You must have been one of those kids that would push girls into the mud to tell them you liked them. I truly hope they fire you.

Also, the title of this article is ridiculous, as Bush had nothing to do with anything. Unless you were hired to merely inspire the masses of SG against you, most of the things that you say are much like this: stupid.

Yeah yeah yeah FTR you hate Bush. We get it. What we don't get from you is actual news... And on the rare occasion that you do attempt to report something news worthy, its always one sided and full of your own personal bullshit that it makes me wonder if the hatred is personal. So spill it big guy. Are you some jaded bastard love child of Bush and vow to taint his name at every turn because he refuses to acknowledge you? Or are you just that stupid to believe that your opinion is the only one that matters and therefore have the right to insult not only the people you write about, but most of the readers as well?

Why is there a need to exaggerate how bad a President that Bush is? It may be hard for some to imagine but Bush isn't the worst President in the history of the United States. President Harding holds that fine distinction.

Well, I'm going to be bypassing the political "news and commentary" from FTR in the future. I enjoy this site, I enjoy all the alternate references to music, books, and ideas that you rarely see or can find in the mainstream media.

Politics to me is about discussion , airing opposing views, and coming to a compromise, something this editor refuses to do. Who continues to espouse his point of view with a tirade of hate filled arguements of you're with us or against us mentality.

The personal bashing that consistently appear under this "Editor" by him or his readers are insulting at worse and whiney at the least. The personal attacks and comments by him to posters who don't lock step into his line of thinking is a detriment to this site. I'm not going to let this Leftwing version of GWB push me from enjoying the site. Again, I will exercise my right to bypass any tag with FTR attached, and continue reading and enjoying other articles.
