Bush chose his recent visit to Vietnam to once again display his incredible diplomacy skills. He spent the entire time not meeting one Vietnamese person who was not part of his official schedule. His national security advisor, Stephen J. Hadley, admitted the president has not actually come into "direct contact" with the locals but they still really got to know each other.

"If you'd been part of the president's motorcade as we've shuttled back and forth," he said, reporters would have seen that "the president has been doing a lot of waving and getting a lot of waving and smiles. I think he's gotten a real sense of the warmth of the Vietnamese people and their willingness to put a very difficult period for both the United States and Vietnam behind them."

The president drove around in a car and waved, what more do you fucking want? He smiled. He didn't have to do that. And he felt the warmth of their smiles. Plus he could tell from those smiles that they wanted to put the past behind them. You know, the past where we interfered with their civil war and killed millions of them.

On Saturday, Bush only came out of his hotel once, for a 15-minute visit to the Joint P.O.W./M.I.A. Accounting Command. The organization searches for the 1,800 Americans who are still missing. Some would call a 15-minute visit a "photo-op."

The Vietnamese who did get a small dose of Bush were not impressed. At his first stop he gave a speech in Singapore.

The response was tepid - the invited audience somehow missed several of built-in applause lines - and one senior Singaporean diplomat, declining to be quoted by name, said there was little in the speech "that his father didn't say to us 15 years ago."

Thanks for making us proud once again, George.

It's too bad that our country doesn't have a Foreign Relations Handbook For Dummies co-authored by both Reagan and Clinton. They seemed to have a pretty good handle on such matters. Different styles - but both were very effective.

He goes to Vietnam and tells the Vietnamese that the lesson of the Vietnam War is that "we'll succeed unless we quit."

In other words, "If we had stayed in Vietnam longer, and bombed you gooks even more, we would have won. Wouldn't that have been great?"

Jesus. A person who read "Diplomacy For Dummies" would know better.

No shit. I attended that speech (the one 15 years ago), and it was no great shakes, but little Bush still didn't come within miles of it.

If there's any country that has a right to not be impressed by Americans, it's Vietnam.

True, but the Vietnamese are actually surprisingly pro-American.

Iraq is Bush's Vietnam, Part II. Bush dodged the draft and dodged the Vietnamese during his latest visit. What a coincidence! whatever
