I'm lost

NOV 11, 2006 12:13 PM

Now that all the celebrating is over after the Democrats absolute destruction of Republicans on Tuesday, it’s time to turn our attention to all the cheating the red state assholes were up to. As usual under Karl Rove, there was quite a bit going on.

In Florida’s 13th district, electronic voting machines were shockingly involved in a shady result.
In the House race between Democrat Christine Jennings and Republican Vern Buchanan, 18,000 votes are missing. It seems 13 percent of votes in Sarasota county picked candidates in other races but didn’t choose anyone for the House race. Guess who is ahead. Buchanan by 386 votes.

Voters complained that the electronic voting machines left off a vote for Jennings in their voting summary screens. Under voting for top ballot races on electronic voting machines is usually around 1 percent. 13 percent is higher than 1 percent. Of course the machines did not include the highly elusive technology of paper printouts. But luckily for Sarasota, the Southern District Hospital Board votes went off without a hitch. 4,000 more people cast ballots for the board than for the House race. And it's the same House seat that was vacated by the hot ass of one Katherine Harris.

Jennings. I would fuck her
and her hair.

Sadly, the Republican cheating did not stop there in Florida’s 13th district. Democrats also enjoyed rounds of “Robo calling.” Calls were placed to registered democrats in districts all around the country.

The NRCC's calls began by saying something like "Hi, I'm calling with information about [the Democratic candidate]," then continued to give negative information about the candidate. They did not identify the true source of the calls until the very end, when they informed the listener (if he/she bothered to stay on the line until the end of the call), that the NRCC had paid for it. Voters reported being called again and again. A number of Democratic campaigns reported receiving complaints from voters who thought that the calls were coming from the Democrat, because of the calls' lead-in.

Florida’s 13th district was one that endured this blatantly illegal robo calling. In the final weeks of the election, the NRCC spent $58,326.78 on robo calls against Jennings. That amount could have led to 1.17 million calls in the district. Only 250,000 voted. It had the desired effect.

"We're just glad it's all over," said Betty Beatty, whose husband, Gale, was teaching a line dancing class at the recreation hall.

"They bugged us with their phone calls something terrible," said Betty, who voted for Buchanan because "with all her calls, Jennings, Jennings, Jennings, I wouldn't have voted for that woman if she were the only one running."

This undermining of democracy was seen in over 50 races across the country. The races were always close and the robo calling seems to have worked in some of them.

-- In New York's 25th District, Dan Maffei lost by less than 4,000 votes out of a total of more than 200,000. As this local news report shows, voters got repeat calls, leading many to think that they were being harrassed by the Maffei campaign. You can hear one of the calls here.

-- In Illinois' 6th District, Tammy Duckworth, who was the victim of the NRCC's robo call campaign (listen to a voter's glutted answering machine here), also lost by approximately 4,000 votes.

-- In Pennsylvania's 6th District, Lois Murphy lost by 3,000 votes. As the AP reported, her district was inundated by the calls.

And there's also Eric Massa, who narrowly lost in New York's 29th (less than 6,000 votes), Diane Farrell in Connecticut (down slightly more than 6,000), and Phillip Kellam in Virginia's 2nd (down less than 5,000 votes) -- all of whom were victims of the NRCC's robo call effort.

The Democrats want the FEC, FCC and Justice Department to investigate the calls. Now that the Democrats control things I would not expect this to go away. And I believe it will lead to even greater losses in the next election because suppression of the vote and dirty tricks are what Bush and company have relied on to win. Expect that advantage to be erased through legislation.

While I think that blaming the Republicans on the failures of electronic voting machines might be a little bit overboard, not to mention likely unprovable; this business with the constant phone calling is fucking absurd. Last time I checked, the minimum age to run for the House or Senate was 25 and 30 years old respectively, and yet according the campaigns we're voting on a bunch of fucking immature children.

Depressing.

That's a pretty harsh accusation - especially when the news reported:
"About 18,000 people who cast votes in other races in Tuesday's election failed to record a vote for either candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives."

Neither candidate received votes.

when the failures of electronic voting machines are in the republicans' favor, i think blaming them is appropriate.

Yet if you actually read the linked articles you would see there was not a mention of the Republicans name falling off the voter summary, only the Democrats.

It's not a harsh accusation if your not retarded.

Man, you stole my line.

Anyway, there was also some shady shit going on in Virginia. My friends father is a Democratic leader in Virginia and he said that people were leaving door hangy things, on Democratic households only, telling people to go out and vote Democrat. They also conveniently left polling places; unfortunately, they left the wrong ones.

Or, we could wait until an investigation takes place and THEN see who is actually liable.

Being so impulsive is part of why we're in Iraq.

I'm really not sure why the people in that county even had to vote for paper receipts. You'd think it would be mandatory with all electronic voting. I guess someone figured, "Hey, we can save a shitload on paper if....."

So, your amazing ability to attack anyone that says something contrary to your belief and your subsequent name-calling is any better? Stick to posting your articles, because when you "defend" yourself, you act like a child and discredit everything that you previously said.

OK, either I'm not fully understanding this or my pain meds have kicked in. Why wouldn't they put door hangers on EVERYONE's door? It seems they would want the sway the Republicans more than their own party. I wouldn't call that "shady" as much as I'd call it "oops." smile

Because they wanted Republicans going to the right places to vote. The door hanger things had the incorrect polling places on them.

"No shit, Sherlock." Another zinger. Do you also major in knock-knock jokes? Care to dazzle us with your breakdown of the word, "ASSUME?"

In the future, I'll try to remember to be more careful when addressing you since you obviously cannot reply without some sort of 1992 school yard comment.

Funny, I thought that having a republican party that mysteriously benefited from electoral irregularities was part of the reason that US soldiers were sent to Iraq.

In all fairness to Monsieur Gringo, the title of this thread clearly calls out Republicans specifically, so he was saying that we should wait until there is an investigation until we blame the 'Pubs.

At least, that's how I understood it.

Which is why I said, "PART." wink But in reality, our troops were launched by Congress prematurely (in my opinion) without having or knowing all of the facts. That's what I was referring to.

do you want me to explain it to you? do you want me to hold your hand?

like i said earlier, when apparent voting fraud is in the favor of republican candidates (or candidtates of any party), it's appropriate to hold them to account. of course, there would have to be an investigation into whether or not there was actually an issue of voter fraud and manipulation. simply, there is a difference between blaming them and actually finding them accountable: there'd have to be proof before making such a claim. see: "accusation" and "conviction." i thought that'd be an easy enough step for anyone to understand and that i wouldn't actually have to explain the entire process. leave it to an idiot to think otherwise and point out the obvious.

now follow your own advice, please, and troll elsewhere.

I read a piece in Newsweek a short while ago about electronic voting machines.
It noted that they are all made by large corparations and have the right to restrict data unloading, recounts and hardcopy printouts. Basicly everything in the machine was protected like intellectual property. They raised the concern as to who was more in favor with corps. like Diebold;...hint, not the Dems.
