Franklin Roosevelt had his first hundred days.

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi is thinking 100 hours, time enough, she says, to begin to "drain the swamp" after more than a decade of Republican rule.

Day One: Put new rules in place to "break the link between lobbyists and legislation."

Day Two: Enact all the recommendations made by the commission that investigated the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Time remaining until 100 hours: Raise the minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, maybe in one step. Cut the interest rate on student loans in half. Allow the government to negotiate directly with the pharmaceutical companies for lower drug prices for Medicare patients.

Broaden the types of stem cell research allowed with federal funds "I hope with a veto-proof majority," she added in an Associated Press interview Thursday.

All the days after that: "Pay as you go," meaning no increasing the deficit, whether the issue is middle class tax relief, health care or some other priority.

It will be interesting to track.
When do they get sworn in?

Congratulations to Speaker Pelosi, to answer your question, the new Congress will be sworn in in early January. I look forward to either A) implementing the 100 hour plan, or B) watching the Rethugs vote against it in the Senate and then crucifying them at polls for those votes come November 2008.

Sorry, Nancy Pelosi's plan if the Democrats won the house.

This was what Senator (and Speaker of the next House of Representatives) Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said about the first 100 hours after a Democratic victory in Congress.

Sadly, actually doing those things is going to be difficult without firm control of the Senate, but it should be interesting to see what sort of legislation comes out of the House in that time.

Day 2, at the very least, would be pretty hard to vote against.

Okay, I take it back. Looks like Dems will probably have both the House and the Senate. Still, as oyaji pointed out in the 2006 Election thread, anything but 60 seats means there's bargaining to be done to get legislation through. But you're right, enacting the recommendations of the 9/11 commission is a no-brainer and it's political suicide for the Republicans not doing it sooner and letting Democrats take credit for it. Tards.
