Well it's been a tense few months since my previous article on the contest, but I'm pleased to say that the results are in, the judges are happy and we have a decision!

The winner of Iran's "Gratuitous Jew-Hate" cartoon contest is....Mr Abdollah Derkaoui from Morocco.

If gambling wasn't haram, I reckon you'd have got good odds at any Tehran bookies for Abdollah's entry. Most people's money would surely have been on one of the many entries featuring Jewish vampires.

But perhaps such classical motifs are now considered too "obvious", or maybe even a little passé, in the increasingly sophisticated world of Judeophobia.

The cognoscenti were possibly rooting for this hilarious cartoon of Adolf Hitler raping Anne Frank.

In fact, the judges surprised everyone and went for Derkaoui's more subtle entry -a work featuring Israel's infamous security barrier being compared to Auschwitz.

Although the wall in question has saved hundreds of lives since its construction, I doubt the cartoon was picked for its irony.

More likely, they just sifted through the mountains of racist crap until they came to an entry that would appeal to political antisemites sorry - my bad - "antizionists" in the West.

However, on announcing the winners, Iranian Culture Minister Mohammad Hossein Saffar-Harandi couldn't resist adding

"The Holocaust is a myth and this issue has finally made waves thanks to the action of President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad in daring to express himself on the subject and break the Holocaust taboo"

The contest was held in retaliation to the Danish Mohammed cartoons, but rather than asking people to contribute work derogating Danish heroes, bacon, little bronze mermaids or Norse gods, participants were invited to send in their "Holocaust Funnies".

You'd have to have black belt in radical Islamism to see the connection. Certainly Denmark lost Jews in the holocaust, but these days the country is overwhelmingly Lutheran.

Perhaps, I'm looking at this too deeply. The organizers said they chose the holocaust angle for its "shock value". Sure - it was just "Springtime for Hitler" reworked. The Iranian regime aren't just a bunch antisemitic motherfuckers.

"...a gay romp with Adolf and Eva in Berchtesgaden . Fantastic!"

Finally, a big "mazeltov" to Derkaoui, pockets $12,000 for his work. I wonder what he'll spend it on.

TEHRAN, Iran -
Iran's competition for cartoons mocking the Holocaust drew international reproach but made little impression at home Thursday, with not a single Iranian newspaper publishing the winning entries and people on the street saying it left them unmoved.

NASSER KARIMI, Associated Press Writer

Not even in Iran did these cartoons get any kind of attention. Do you really want to help spread them around ?

"The exhibition had no remarkable impact on public opinion," said Gohar Dashti, a professor at the Soureh Art University in Tehran. "It was neither a concern of students nor of the media."

"Drawing cartoons ... isn't a good way to solve real and old problems," said Ahmad Nasiri, a 23-year-old architecture student. "Denying the Holocaust through cartoons doesn't contribute to humanity."

Iranian newspapers reported the results of the competition Thursday, but gave it no significant coverage. Not one paper printed the winning cartoon.

Thanks for sharing them though. No Iranian paper would.

Oh !! but I guess that was mentioned

I think it's safe to say that no one on this site would have ever seen any of these had you not posted them. It doesn't forgive them, but they're not exactly what one would call pervasive in the West.

Ahh, thank you for this wildly right-wing "joke." One can like Judaism AND criticize Israel and, believe it or not, not be an antisemite. To further the misperception that anyone who is opposed to Israeli political or military policies is an antisemite--even as a hilarious joke--is still insulting.

I read the story this morning an this kids words hung with me all day.
I was very impressed.
For some reason, even though it's very simple I found it deeply intelligent, thoughtful and moving. As well as seeming very bold considering the position of the leadership of Iran on the subject.
I recognize that I don't know shit about him though and for all I know his thoughts on what would be good ways to solve problems and contribute to humanity may still be put all the women in burquas and behead some mofos. I just don't know.
But I was impressed that he was thinking about it. Solving real and old problems and contributing to humanity that is, not the holocaust.

I remember hearing this contest was launched to show the west what it was like to have those Mohammed cartoons published.

Turns out some of us do care. However, I don't see anyone rioting and killing people yet.

Without religion we may have seen a blood bag or wall with some decent representation written on it. But because everything gets muddied by religion we are left with nothing but bullshit. And we are no closer to being aware of any facts. Religion is full of excuses and creates many a scapegoat. No wonder no one wants to get rid of it. They may be accountable afterwards.

The winning entry actually looks like a pretty standard political cartoon to me. (Which is not to say that I agree with the message.)

Why is everyone upset that this story was posted? This is an alternative interest porn site and I don't see anyone getting mad when articles about heroin abuse, amputees, and other "objectionary' topics are posted. If you want your 'news' filtered go sign up for the Christian Science Monitor or something, offensive shit happens everyday and people make fun of it here everyday. To get mad the one time the story effects you is kinda dumb. whatever

I dunno, the cartoons are called "mountains of racist crap" and points to the inaccuracies in the wall cartoon.. doesn't seem like too much hate mongering.. as for the 'message of morality' we like in our SG stories perhaps we can find that in the story claiming Al Qaeda may be responsible for skin infections in LA... I stand by my point

your conclusion is that the point of the OP was to point out the obvious? yes, i know it's anti-semitic crap. yes, i know it's extremely tasteless. and yes, i know it shouldn't be displayed carelessly. so what's uptight's excuse for reposting it? i'm not accusing him of hate mongering, i'm just questioning his taste and the necessity for forwarding such blatant anti-semitism.

as for the "al qaeda causes staph" story, that was just a bit of stupid jokes to add some spice to a story. it wasn't opining, and it should have been obvious to some people that not only does al qaeda have nothing to do with the staph infections on skid row, but that FearTheReaper loves to post blatantly sarcastic non sequiturs. between editorial goofiness and the pointless reposting of hate, i'd say there is no logical moral comparison. savvy?

now what's your point? you want to turn this personal and bitch about goofy editors or do you want to be a human being and say that giving shit like this attention and free publicity isn't cool?

The point of Muslims reproducing the original Muhammed cartoon was to incite justified hate in the Muslim community (i.e. "Look at how racist they are!"). This is just the same thing isn't it?

Neither, I just wanted it on the record that everything is fair game here. Racist news included. I have faith that people are able to decipher the meanings behind the stories and not be distracted and swayed by the racist implications of the primary sources. I did not know about the cartoons until I clicked, and was glad there were examples so I knew the extent of vulgarity. In order to become more aware we have to try to remain objective. By excluding images or text based on fear of offense, we only risk becoming as ignorant as the source of the material. Maybe there should have been a disclaimer before the cartoons that said BAD so some people would not have the wrong idea, but I still am grateful it was posted. I agree with everyone else the images are hateful, but they are still important. The comment on the staph infection thread was just to show that this site should not be taken seriously in its journalistic endeavors.
