from CNN

An aircraft has crashed into the middle of a brick highrise residential building on Manhattan's Upper East Side at 72nd Street and York Avenue, police officials said.

The building is located near Rockefeller Center and is very close to the Hudson River. A North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) spokesperson told CNN that it had not been tracking the plane.

There was no word on casualties as firefighters battled the flames that shot up from several windows on the 10th story. The Federal Aviation Administration has said a "general aviation" aircraft had hit the building.

Video from the scene shows at least three apartments in the high rise fully engulfed in flames.

FBI says this is not (as far as they know) terrorism related.

That seems to make sense - why would Al Qaeda attack a condo?

OTOH, what the fuck was a light aircraft doing flying up a city street?

If this is terror-related, will it be referred to as 10/11?

There are virtually no details yet that aren't contradicted by others, so the answer to the first post is "No."

In general, though, this is pretty fucked.

CNN says the gub'ment is deploying fighter jets over U.S. cities as a precaution. But so far I see and hear none from my vantage point in a high rise office building in downtown Chicago.

As of fourteen minutes ago, from NYT

An aircraft crashed into a building in New York City's Upper East Side this afternoon, igniting several apartments of the residential high rise before pieces of the building crashed onto the ground, witnesses and officials said.

A Fire Department spokeswoman, Emily Rahimi, told The Associated Press that the aircraft struck the 20th floor of the building, 524 E. 72nd St., near York Avenue. However, television reports said the aircraft hit closer to the 40th floor.

There are no reports of any injuries so far, and the authorities have not said whether the aircraft was a small airplane or a helicopter.

Television views of the fire showed flames shooting out of four windows and smoke that streamed up into the sky, visible for miles. The building is a 50-story condominium that was built in 1986, The A.P. said, and has 183 apartments.

It's never "too soon" on the Daily Kos...

Small Aircraft hits building in New York City.... Just throwing this up here because I didn't see it any place else.... Are we going through another bit of trouble or is someone just acting like they are stuck in stupid again...??? Remember this happened on BushCo's watch & not the Dems... They did this while Bush was in office... Use it wisely America....

They're doing the same on lgf. Obviously, both ideologies have partisans who lack decency (and some of whom figure prominently on. And fuck you for trying to rest the rest of us with the same brush.

Leave it lie.

it's amazing to watch the differences in reporting tactics.
NY1 is very upfront and practical. emphasis on information as it's made available.
FOX is insane and emphasizes things like fighter jets and the possibilities of terrorists repeatedly. "this does NOT rule the possibility that this is a terrorist plot"
CNN is worse than FOX. they kept mentioning "panic" that isn't actually happening. and shows the fire before it was put out. terror is still not ruled out!
i do believe the definition of terror is the ability to cause fear and panic.
well done FOX.
well done CNN.
