While the world is focusing on Iran's wishes to enrich uranium, North Korea has announced that they are going to up the amount of weapons grade plutonium it is producing. The Yongbyon reactor is going to be ready for harvest by the end of '06. Fuck coal, bad little North Korean children are getting nuclear fuel rods in their stockings this year!

Although North Korea is known for puffing out it's chest for international attention, they leave no doubt what they want the plutonium for.

Selig Harrison told reporters in Beijing he had met several North Korean officials on a recent trip to the country, including the top nuclear negotiator, Kim Kye-gwan.

Mr Harrison is one of very few US academics with close contacts with the North Korean government.

He said Mr Kim had told him the "purpose of unloading the fuel was to obtain more plutonium for nuclear weapons".

Mr Harrison said Pyongyang wants "to use Yongbyon as leverage" to get bilateral talks with the US.

Any of this sound familiar? But, just having the plutonium doesn't mean anything, does it? It's not like they are thinking of testing a nuclear weapon any time soon. Right?

Intelligence reports of heightened activity at a suspected underground site in North Korea have prompted reports that Pyongyang might be planning a nuclear test.

Mr Harrison is quoted by the Associated Press news agency as saying he believes the North Korean leadership is still debating whether to conduct a test.

Although this is probably just another ploy to get the US and UN to dance for them some more, N. Korea and their pissing contest mentality is really starting to get old.

The reason that the posts are so few is that there is no real point of contention. It's all fact. N. Korea is trying to develop nuclear weapons. No argument there. They are most likely doing it to force the US and UN into diplomacy. No argument there. Why are we in Iraq where the evidence was so 'iffy' when it's not here? I dunno. It's fucking retarded. No argument there. Great piece otherwise though DHD. It's good to remind people that N. Korea is still an actual threat rather than a supposed one, especially when they just fired a missle over Japan.

Side note: It's funny, I get the feeling that both Iran and N. Korea are making these bold claims and acts solely because they want someone to listen to them. They want to be treated as equals and not lesser members of the world community. What's even funnier is that they have to go through all this trouble to get us to listen to them and we still refuse to do so. I mean it's not really funny, it's actually sad that we won't listen to their complaints about the world order short of them threatening to blow us off the map. Should nations really need to be pushed to such extreme rhetoric and action just to get someone to listen to them? Certainly not. Maybe we should be more attentive to other people's needs and less nation-centric in our approach to the world, and then we won't have to deal with these overt threats of force. It's the 'squeeky wheel gets the grease' paradigm of international diplomacy right now. Kinda sad if I do say so myself. It's almost as if we view them as little kids, once they get the nukes then they're grown-up enough to talk to till then just keep them at the kiddie table.

You could make that case for some of the other countries we ignore but Iran and N. Korea are frankly dicks. N. Korea is run by a lunatic and Iran isn't that far off. Iran doesn't like us but I think they are attempting to gain power over the entire region rather then trying to force the United States to listen to them. With the Iraq war they saw an opportunity and they took it.

As for what the hell N. Korea wants who knows. I think he wants to not be over thrown but he keeps stepping up the military force. He might want us to listen to him but I don't see him making any rational demands. The guy is starving his country to death and we need to get China to do something.

Well, if N. Korea does test one off it will serve two real purposes for the US, 1.) it will use up a nice size chunk of the weapons grade material they have so it will be a while until they can make more, if it doesn't go boom they will have destroyed a nice size chunk of their weapons grade material for us and the world and 2.) if it does go boom China will be there the next morning asking for the rest of the material with an offer the N. Korean's cannot refuse.

You're sure that extending Chinese power is in the US's interest?

N. Korea to Japan: I Pity The Fool Who Puts Sanctions Against Us

"We will take strong countermeasures," Kyodo quoted Song Il Ho, North Korea's ambassador in charge of diplomatic normalization talks with Japan, as saying in an interview on Wednesday when asked about fresh sanctions by Japan.

"The specific contents will become clear if you keep watching. We never speak empty words," he added.

Kim Jong Il is reportedly a devotee of Japanese period soap operas...

You know...love and betrayal in the time of the samurai.

I reckon Kim's the kind of guy that would never nuke his main suppliers of quality melodrama.
