Okay, so here it is: a url for all you naysayers out there who say I never put anything into my editorials. Quite honestly, I'm hopping mad at FEMA and the DHS (Department of Homeland Security). What a bunch of wasteful, arrogant assholes. We could have done a better job running things after Katrina then these morons. I mean come on... let's be serious! Have you seen the total bill? If you've been watching the news or opened a newspaper you have, and it's terrible.

1) $68,000 on 2,000 sets of dog booties. Okay, so if they have a purpose...then why the hell are they in a warehouse? Why didn't the dogs wear them? Why can't we sell them to PETCO? What have they done with the receipts that we can't return them? Unbelievable.

2) The Ipods. Now on the radio last night, I did hear they "supposedly" had a valid use for storing data and training. What's to stop them from then using them to download MP3's and listen to Paris Hilton's latest hit? This just blows my mind. Why Ipods? Couldn't they just attend a seminar and take notes? Wouldn't that be more cost effective? Again, unbelievable.

3) The lost boats. Okay, tell me: how do you lose a boat? Does it walk away? Does it get up and do tricks? For that matter, how did they lose the laptops? Ineffective management. What a waste of our tax money. We should all be outraged at this. The government is taking money from us, putting it in useless departments, and they're spending like there's no tomorrow. I really hate those guys sometimes.

4) The designer coats. I don't know if you guys heard about it, but this just defies logic. They bought these designer trench coats (sorry, don't know the name - it was on the radio last night and I can't find it anywhere). Anywho, they bought them for the firing range for when it rains. And then promptly forgot that when it rains… the firing range is closed. Cost of coats: $25,000 of our money. Truly pathetic.

Is there no hope? Is there no punishment? Are there no repercussions? I mean, the GOA meant to do a damn fine thing here, but what does our illustrious President do? Nothing. No cutbacks, no warnings - not a damn thing. He just lets money that should be spent on the war on terror go to waste. One word: disgusting.

mom?

seriously, though, you're preaching to the choir. and to think, fema used to be an effective department, back when it wasn't needlessly integrated into the dhs. and i doubt the nepotism helped, either.

fema and the dhs aren't solely responsible for handling disasters caused by terrorists, but disasters in general. they completely botched the handling of katrina and the destruction of new orleans. how can you feel confident that they'll protect us from another disaster, or another terrorist attack? even before katrina, there were reports of inadequacies, and it's a general, bi-partisan consensus that neither fema nor the dhs are prepared to handle another disaster, man-made or otherwise, on american soil.

Gang, could you possibly stop posting at Thetotal_M long enough to respond to the actual meat of the post?

Sheesh. The guy's making an attempt to get his thoughts across in a constructive manner.

In general in Washington, it's follow the money. I'd hazard a guess that the right person with the right connections was selling the dog booties.

Some of the stuff may have more reasonable explanations. It's a lot easier (and a better story) if you throw attention-getting nutty sounding expenditures completely out of their proper context out than actually analyzing the details of their expenditures.

I do think that bundling up a bunch of relatively unrelated parts of the gov't into a big catch-all bureaucracy wasn't the wisest possible course of action.

I think the problem lies in the fact that Bush folded FEMA into the Department of Homeland Security...and that the Louisiana National Guard who would normally have been on hand to both prepare for the disaster and assist in rescue/aid efforts were in Iraq liberating the Iraqi people...
