I would also like to place it on the record that I have trouble sometimes telling when Colbert is and isn't out of character anymore. So, maybe I just as this "satire in character" thing.

Colbert is always in character, isn't he?
You can generally tell if it's satire by whether or not there's a punchline.

Yes.

Seriously, I cannot imagine anyone taking this shit seriously. I mean, whether or not it's funny is one thing. But to just miss the hyperbole completely? No.

Any faith I had in humanity after the Schiavo affair, has left in the cloud of people unable to recognize the satiric nature of FearTheReaper's writing. Althought I guess it says something about the current state of right wing politics in the US that
Wingless angel Terry Schiavo was murdered on March 31, 2005 when her food was taken away by faithless beasts doing the bidding of Satan.
can be taken seriously.
What I love is that there's a satiric response right away. Then the poster points out rather clearly that that his knee-jerk response was satirical, which would kind of let you know that the original post was equally satirical (if you had no sense of humor at all, and couldn't grasp the meaning of "After watching the program in liberal gay promoting Massachusetts,"); well, one poster had to ask, "seriously. is this a joke?"
I love it. FearTheReaper, will you marry me in Massachusetts?

Just out of curiousity, if this kind of rhetoric, meant seriously, heard enough in the states for there to be a difficulty distinguishing between reality and satire?
there are, actually, several popular screaming heads who sound pretty much just like FTR-- limbaugh, coulter, hannity, savage, etc-- but I don't really think that's what's going on. everyone understands the onion after all, and they play it far straighter and more subtle than this. maybe people truly are used to satirists being less ridiculous than actual hardcore republicans? I dunno.
I don't think it's that hard to understand. Colbert's show is on Comedy Central. Which would tend to predispose one to assuming that the show is meant to be comedic. The Onion not only presents itself as a comedic paper, but is wall to wall articles like that, and while it frequently plays off real life, the articles themselves are completely made up. Whereas FearTheReaper is surrounded by news articles by himself and others that are perfectly serious (or maybe splash in a bit of clearly distinguished humor), and is commenting on actual real life events. So you need to either have some experience with his similar articles, or be able to identify the exaggerated phrasing and unrelenting hammering of the "humor" as making it not serious.
I realize the intent is ironic sarcasm, but the delivery, as is so often the case, is ham-fisted...and I mean a whole truckload of bacon here. In addition, any actual 'point' is usually lost in a sea of scattershot invective.
