I took part in a small race of 14 kilometers (8.8 miles), ran it in 1 hour and 15 minutes, and I came to the finish line next to last. Not that I was hoping for anything at all, but ... it was interesting to participate in a running competition for the first time in my life. The first place winner ran this distance in 45 minutes. He is some kind of superman.
