Argh.
Do not go see 300.
Horrible translation of the book. Not true to it's source in any way other than title and some visuals. The appallingly contrived subplot that they added (everything with the wife) is really shotty. They cut out the second most important character in the story (Stelios) and added a bunch of mutant freaks (the headsman, the rhino and the freak with the Immortals) for some extra-boring fight scenes. The Spartans do not fight like they do in the book, which is to say as a cohesive unit. Instead they fight like they are extras from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - individuals with little regard for tactics or stretegy. They portray Spartan training entirely inaccurately. Dozens of tacky, lame one liners that aren't in the book. Many of the book's most poignant, intelligent lines used as chuckler side-gags.
Most sacreligious of all, the movie loses the true message of the book. The bond of brotherhood that people forge in the harshest fires and the need to create a place for yourself. The book is not about a man 'fighting for love' or even, really, for his country. It is made clear that the smartest thing he could have done for his country is capitulate. He fights for pride. His pride and his people's pride.
This is the most disappointing movie I've seen since the Matrix 2.
