Interesting week in comic books last week. Ultimates finally came back, after a somewhat extended hiatus. Astonishing X-Men finally came back after an all too long disappearance. Gaiman's new book, the Eternals started up. More 52, of course.
All in all the Ultimates and Astonishing were the best of this week's mainstream books. The Ultimates is about to wrap its second plot line and is going out with a bang, as you might expect if you've read the series consistently. This issue has beautiful art, great action and a few neat suprises. I highly recommend it. Astonishing X-Men is, in my opinion, the best X-Men book being written. Its doing some fun and new stuff with the characters and the art is beautiful as well.
Some spoilers for the Astonishing.
I'm sad to see Emma being made a villain again. She's been such a great character as a hero and actually helped thoroughly reinvigorate Cyclops' character in changing the stagnant relationship with Jean. Thankfully, for now, Jean is still dead. Personally, I hope it stays that way - some characters' stories are over. Jean is one of them.
On another note, Gaiman's new Eternals run started. Art is fine, writing isn't bad - which you can expect from Neil - but I just don't care about the characters. The Eternals have always been a second rate New Gods in Marvel's mythos. That said, I'll give it another issue or two to get my attention. Gaiman rarely disappoints.
52, equally, continues to dawdle along with only a marginal interest from me. I hope it picks up soon, otherwise I'll drop the book.
