Friends,

I have some stuff I've been working on that I want to share: you may have seen me Tweet/post on Facebook about D4RT - a mobile workshop dedicated to bringing art supplies and a public art project to Yantal - a Peruvian village in the heart of the Amazon jungle.

If you've been keeping away from internet's temptations, a quick summary: a few months ago I met some documentary filmmakers working on a film about Yantal. Watching their raw footage, I felt drawn to Yantal's people, who have managed to cultivate a thriving community despite severe poverty. I wanted to help.

D4RT materialized from my own experience with art education, the impact it had and my desire to create a program that's accessible and different. I decided to develop a 5-day, fantasy-based lesson plan, complete with art supply kits given to each of my students and two full days spent creating a mural together. Having been through every type of art class imaginable, I'm working on a course designed specifically to engage young kids and keep them interested in art long after our week together. I'm also be working with the Yantal Peru Foundation to establish a permanent art program in the village.

This project, even though it started with me wanting to help one small Peruvian community, has become very important to me. I've decided to expand D4RT to reach kids in impoverished communities all around the globe. I launched a $5,000 Kickstarter effort to fund the first round in Yantal - a very low goal, especially for Kickstarter, where art projects regularly raise over $30,000.

With the support of my kind and generous internet network, I was able to raise $6,696 in a matter of 13 days, which I'm immensely grateful for - D4RT in Yantal is funded!. Now, we only have 17 days left to raise enough money to expand this program and bring art education to other impoverished communities around the world. Here is what happens if we can raise over $13,000:

If I raise $13,000, I will bring D4RT to a Cambodian orphanage in the summer of 2012.
If I raise $20,000, it will be enough to fund one more D4RT 2012 installment, ideally a second visit to Yantal to continue work on establishing a permanent art program there.
The more I raise now, the more time and resources I'll be able to devote to rigorous preparation and planning, establishing a full-fledged mobile art class and international network devoted to bringing art education and public art projects program to schools and other children's organizations in developing countries.

It would be awesome if you could do a short write-up / let your twitter followers know / direct folks to D4RT's Kickstarter page, and ask some of your friends (especially the influential ones) to contribute and spread the word. There are images and a fun, informative video - check it out for yourself!
