So in lo these two years I have never submitted a journal entry but now feel I should start. As a wannabe freelance writer you'd think I could muster the energy to dash off the occasional entry.
The thought of so many people being privy to my private scribblings I guess posed as a great barrier. Down come the shackles.
My first entry will take a list form. I have revisited two lists I made many moons ago, one was titled "Things that Make Me Happy" and the other "Things That Bother Me."
So here goes:
"Things That Bother Me"
1. Drivers who don't use their turn signal
2. Broken glass in the street
3. Flat bike tires on rainy days when I don't have the foresight to carry a spare inner tube.
4. Bicyclists on cell phones.
5. Anyone using a cell phone in public.
6. Call waiting
7. Caller i.d.
8. Smokey bars
9. Guys who wear ballcaps backwards
10. Public urination
11. Dog owners who don't pick up after their dog.
12. Racism
13. Ostentatious displays of wealth
14. Lying
15. Cheating
16. Fierce, blind patriotism
17. The cult of celebrity
18. The bland taste of Soy milk
19. The infrequency of CTA buses on cold days
20. Mushy bananas (unless they are used to make banana bread)
21. Condiments especially Mayonaise and Miracle Whip
22. Pickles
23. People who wear walkmans when biking, jogging, or rollerblading.
24. Hippie jam bands
Things That Make Me Happy
1. Courteous drivers
2. Smoothly paved bike lanes
3. Bicyclists who announce their passing side
4. Handwritten letters
5. Straw hats in the summer
6. Fedoras in the fall
7. The love of my fellow man, woman and child
8. Living within one's means
9. Truth
10. Honesty
11. Thinking in a global perspective
12. Chocolate Malts
13. Mass Transit
14. Smoothies: especially banana-mango ginger and strawberryy-raspberry-blueberry
15. Oatmeal Cake
16. Magnolia blossoms
17. The scent of lilacs and spice viburnum
18. Japanese Maples
19. The changing tapestry of fall colors along the banks of the Mississippi
20. A faded, well-worn pair of Levi's
21. Long bicycle rides with friends along Lake Michigan
22. Hanging out with friends late into the night listening to pop and rock music, eating ice cream, and talking about books, art and decency.
23. Vintage clothes
24. Gaberdine
25. Wing tip shoes
26. Soccer games that don't involve or end in macho aggression
27. Visits from my family
28. Homemade gnocchi
29. Slow simmered tomato sauce (gravy as my Italian mother calls it)
30. Risotto
31. Memories of swimming along/on the Ligurian coast of Italy in the town of Vernazzo
32. Sunsets over Lake Michigan
33. Skinny dipping
34. Kissing girls
35. Haircuts
36. Having a girl rub my freshly cropped head
37. Girls with dimples
38. Redheads
39. Butternut squash and pear soup
40. Handmade ravioli
41. Chocolate chip cookies.
So there you have it. I wonder what I would add to the lists if I had to re-draft them tonight.
It's far too late to think about amendments presently. I should head off to slumberland as I want to get up early and go for a bike ride before work.
Until next time.
