12:00am Saturday night I called Mouse. I had been quoting showtunes (yeah, yeah, whatever, go fuck yourself) and was stumped on a line. When all else fails I call Mouse.
Mouse and I have known each other since 4th grade and since that time we have never gone without talking for more than two months. That's twenty years of mutual appreciation and adoration, folks. She is one of the most well respected theatre production managers in all of Florida and Las Vegas. She's brilliant and loving and has a wonderful family.
We kind of have that "we always know when to call each other" thing. When she picked up, it was all, "Thank God, I needed to hear your voice so bad, but I just couldn't pick up the phone." She explained that she, her live-in boyfriend Matt and his brother had gone hiking at the Grand Canyon Thursday morning. I've met and hung out with Matt several times, he's a decent guy, we always had a good time, and most importantly Mouse loves him, which is all I ever needed to know. The AZ Daily Sun will explain all that's publicly needed to know about the rest of their morning:
"NPS officials have released the name of the man who fell 300 feet from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon Thursday morning.
The man was identified as Matthew A. Dickeson, 29, of Las Vegas, according to NPS information.
The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. near the west side of Bright Angel Point, which is located one-quarter of a mile southeast of the Grand Canyon Lodge and the North Rim developed area.
The park's Dispatch Center received a cell phone call from the Dickeson's brother. National Park Service rangers could not make direct contact with Dickeson, so the park's helicopter was launched. Rangers were short-hauled to the body and rangers confirmed Dickeson had died.
Dickeson's body was transported to the Coconino County Medical Examiner's Office in Flagstaff for examination.
An accident investigation will be conducted by the NPS."
This doesn't even seem to be real, this kind of thing just doesn't happen, and if that's how I'm feeling, I can't even imagine how my beautiful, amazing, wonderful Mouse must feel right now. I'm on standby currently, waiting to find out about services. All other plans are off until further notice.
If you love somebody, think you do, or know that you should, pick up the phone right now and call them and tell them. Please.
Dear Matt,
I'll catch you on the flip side, good buddy. We'll meet up in that redneck trailer park in the sky and drink a few cheap beers.
Much love,
T. (zerobreak)
