hey whats going on in nyc on new years?
it is a sunday night, as you can see, and once again ive found myself in the fine predicament of working or smoking cigarettes and pouring myself a glass of wine again. this frustrates me. by nature, i am not a lazy person, but this semester i've outdone myself. fantastic. i cannot find the motivation, and my work is done distractedly and only to the...

a letter i just sent to the history dean: <i am quite proud of it. or at least, not backing down from this one, as I usually/always do in most grade situations>
Dear Professor _____,
I met with Dr. ____ on thursday with another classmate about our tests. As usual, she showed up late. I know she has a busy schedule, but she scheduled it on her time, and I left a class to meet with her about my grade. I know we did catch her just as she was coming back from the dentists office, and she apologized once again for being on medication, but i felt like the talk was not very helpful at all, and she did not answer our questions. I can tell she loves the course, and if it was not for the grading aspect of it, I wouldn't mind (as much) , but I (or my parents) are paying money for it and my GPA will suffer as a result. She is such a sweet woman, and gave us her home phone number again, and wants to help, but I feel like she has a lot on her plate these days with all her surgeries and numerous health concerns. It would most likely be beneficial for her to rest anyhow, as she constantly cites extremely unbearable neck and back pain in class.
We met about the test. ___ and I both brought up the point that we were told about the test the class before, and aside from only covering a sliver of a chapter on greece in class lecture, the rest of the material of the 4 chapters was left to us to read. We pointed out that the specificity of the test would not have been such a problem if we had been taught the material in class and had ample time to prepare, and not had to read entire book chapters on our own. Our note cards were also formatted a certain way, given that we'd been under assumption from the 11pm email the night before that the test was multiple choice (as she was writing it), and when we got there it was fill in the blank. We agreed that if we'd known this, we would have included many more specifics on the notecard rather than broader ideas. Perhaps even if we hadn't known, and hadn't been told it was a specific format. But leading the class to believe it was one format, and then giving it to them differently the next day is outright misleading and hurtful to one's grade. We also agreed that we understood the basic tenets of each society and culture, however given the limited time to learn the material, we were unable to memorize specifics, and that the test format might have been more successful if it had been in essay form, or some other format that reflected the lectures and readings in lieu of the short amount of time we were given.
Professor _____ cited it as a studying problem on the other hand, and went through what we should be doing. I have been doing everything she said. I attend the class, read the chapter, take notes in class, and go onto the book website to go over the chapter summaries, which i then highlight, and finally format into notecards. When i asked her about some sort of extra credit opportunity for the test, rather than answering me, she went back over studying techniques. I asked her a couple of times, but she didnt seem to either understand the question or evaded it purposely. She just answered that we will have a paper and a test before the semester is over. If i felt I did poorly on the test solely because of my own unpreparedness, I would understand, but this is not the case. I have learned next to nothing in this class, and though she is quite animated and is eager to share her zeal about history, she quite often misses the target by a longshot by going off on tangents or running in and out of the classroom photocopying class worksheets that should have been done ahead of time. I really do not dislike Professor ______, I am just frustrated and do not know what path to take anymore. I am taking quite a hefty load of classes, and really cannot afford to have this unwarranted grade sitting over my head and not nearly enough time left in the semester. I'm not sure if there's anything you can do at this point. I understand you are a busy man, but I just want to prove I know the material and can elaborate on it, and perhaps use this grade in exchange or in addition (averaging grades perhaps) to my terrible test grade. I would be willing to write an essay, any number of essays, or complete some sort of work from another history class taught by a different professor. Maybe even graded by another professor. I will forward you the email she sent us the night before the test as well. I dont really want to get into a confrontation with Professor _____, I dont want to to stress her out any further or add any more to her plate in the dwindling time left in the semester, but I want my grade to be figured out fairly, even if it means giving you or another professor a researched essay to grade to show I know the material. Is this possible? Along with you, I have been talking to my parents about this, as they were quite upset with the midterm grade posted, and have told them I can deal with this on my own, but they have wanted to call. I do need something to tell them sooner rather than later.
As for our meeting, she also told me and __, and one other girl she met with earlier, that we will be having a quiz tommorow, and she will send out an email about it. she has not sent out an email about it, nor has she told the rest of the class. I put in a phone call to both her office and her house, and have recieved nothing back in return. This doesnt really suprise me. Even though she did tell me at our last meeting to call her monday and ask her any questions I had, or email them to her, I am as usual, not able to get in touch.
Can you think of any way to mediate the situation? I'm sorry this email is so long winded, and I dont mean to be a nag. I'd be willing to bet Professor ____, when not so flustered, not flying on medication, and not suffering from extreme health problems, is as great of a teacher as she is a woman in general. But this semester does not seem to be working out.
In addition, thank you for listening to most of our class about this, I really do appreciate it. I know you are busy, and I am more than willing to work around your schedule if you'd like to meet again sometime. Whatever the situation requires. Thanks again, enjoy your evening.
PLease write back as to what I should do if you get the chance,
K.G.
