THIS WEEK IN GEEK
Rockin' the Shell Shock!
Alright I must say now that I have always been and will always be a huge TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for those who are acronymically challenged) fan. I mean c'mon, Turtles was a staple item of every kids life; just as much as Sharkleberry Finn or Purplesaurus Rex Kool-Aid was the essential drinkage of choice! So to my surprise (because I had heard absolutley nothing of this prior) THERE WILL BE ANOTHER TMNT MOVIE!!!
So, alot of really bad ideas came streaming through my mind as well as the major upset that Turtles in Time was (that was the third installment of the films from the 90's). I automatically imagined CGI characters thrown into a world of real people and knew that unless the budget was beyond fucking astronomical it would look like shiat. To my surprise and my excitement they decided to do a full CGI animation film (meaning no human actors at all, except for movement and design elements, but I wont get into that filmy stuff). Even better is that they are going to keep it close the to original Ninja Turtles from Eastman; the baddass turtles which first appeared in black and white comics killing humans left and right.
I can definetly tell as of now by the trailer itself that the theme of this movie is an almagamation of the entire Turtles history (from comics to games to movies and beyond). But only the best of each medium seems to have been brought to the table. Honestly, I can't believe how much detail was spent on this, but it is all for the better of the film. The trailer (teaser trailer at the moment) starts with what most may not realize as an ode to the classic arcarde game. From the semi-clouded sky of the city the camera drops down in a free fall past the city skyscrapers into a shadowy rooftop only to reveal our characters in silhouette. I don't want to spoil the trailer for you so check it out for yourself (link below). Anyways, the characters are styled more classicly "comic" with bits of cartoonish qualities still resting in each turtle. And I can just tell from what I see that there might be a revival of the classic terms such as cowabunga. You can also see great traces of anime in the works as well.
I believe films like this are what are going to usher in anime and cgi based films to the "masses" here in the US. By that I don't mean we don't have a grand anime following as it is, but I think films like this will be the stepping stone for the "average" film-goer to enjoy and find more interest in our new anime crazed generation. All in all, I'm totally geeking out for Turtles and can't wait this film.
I mean they are Teenagers, they're Mutants, they're fucking Ninja, and to top it all off they are Turtles. What more can you ask for (except for maybe some Bebop and Rocksteady)!
