Earlier today I learned the reason why a coworker wasn't in on Friday. Normally something that mundane doesn't really pique interest or curiosity but he's one of those workers that doesn't take a lot of days off unexpectedly. So earlier today he posted on Facebook that his son had committed suicide. In his post he went into detail how his son struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues. He went on to detail how things were looking good for his son. Rehab, counseling, professionally, and a loving girlfriend. As I read the post my heart broke. On many occasions I've talked with my coworker about his son and his struggles and I opened up to him with my own struggles with depression to give what insight I could on the topic. Despite all his sons flaws, the way he spoke of him I knew he loved him fiercly and was proud of him for all that he was and what he had overcome. His son was in his early 20's. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the situation. I want to help my friend, just feeling a bit helpless in that department. For all those out there that share a similar struggle I ask one thing of you, reach out for help. You are important, you matter and you are loved.
