In a bookstore on Saturday, there was this lady talking rather loudly how America is a Christian nation, and that the Atheists are making the country go to hell in a hand basket. She was saying that the framers of the constitution wanted this nation to be Christian, and that if people only read the bible that they would know that being gay was a sin. Needless to say after I bought my books and left I was fuming! My mother confronted her and told here that America was founded on Religious freedom not Christianity, and the lady said quite loudly than go to an Atheist country. That made me laugh, because thats exactly what we are doing and its people like her that I wish to escape from. There are so many religious nuts in America that wish to bend the constitution to their needs that It makes me sick.
It flabbergasts me how people could wish to push their religion upon others. The fact that the lady was so opinionated that she actually had the audacity to tell my mother to go to another country shows me how polarized this place has become. Sometimes I think that the two party system of government cant possibly hold up for too long. It has made the people so against each other that everybody is at everybody elses throats. There is no longer a middle ground, the line has been drawn, and everybody has chosen their sides, either your moral and righteous, or you are Sinful and unrighteous. It scares me the way this country has made such a turn in the past few years. We are not one nation under god, but one nation for the Christian god, and one side for religious freedom. Its as if the public policies of the American nation are slowly but surely picking away at the clause separation of church and state.
The nation is getting restless, and I fear that something big will happen before people are able to find a common ground amongst themselves. A reform of the government is becoming a bigger and bigger prospect in my life, because the two party republic is not a system that is common, nor a system that promotes the right of the people, but the rights of whichever party you belong to. The fact is that the major issues in American politics, arent issues even brought up in any other democratic country. Abortion, creationism, school prayer, stem cell research none of these issues are major issues in ANY other country. America is so deep within the hands of the Christian coalition that it is fast on the road to becoming a theocracy and no longer a democracy.
The fact is that this country is becoming more and more uneducated on social and political issues. The religious right unfortunately has a strong following, and their following, are Idiotic, uneducated religious nuts that think that only good Christians go to heaven, so they must save all the souls of the nation by pushing their religion onto them. The fact is these people use unscrupulous methods in order to get what they want, and many become quite violent when their religious beliefs are challenged. Some of them are almost in the same category of the Islamic Jihad, only that their targets are Abortion clinics and womens rights activists. Sometimes even killing off doctors who practice abortion. Its so scary the turn that this nation has taken!
In the area that I live, if you sport the wrong bumper sticker, like one that speaks of evolution instead of Creationism, your tires will be slashed. There are groups of parents and children that stand on the sidewalks during the weekend that sport signs saying HONK IF YOU LOVE JESUS. It really makes somebody like me get a bunch in their undies, making me want to go to the other side of the road with a sign that says honk if you love Satan. They have this mind state that everybody agrees with what they have to say, and when one doesnt they become quite fearful and combative.
America thinks her way is the only way, and unfortunately this way of thinking has lead America to be scorned by most of the civilized world. I do not deny that America is a powerful nation, and very much one to be feared, but she is also a backwards nation, and she should not whish for other countries in the world to follow her public policies. I dont understand Americas need to fix the problems of other countries when she cant even fix the problems within her own Nation. Poverty rates are growing, racism is running rampant, and the government doesnt give a damn about anybody except for the rich corporations like Halliburton. Were spent all this money on Tsunami relief for a far away nation, yet we cant even help our own storm wrecked victims in New Orleans. Its fucking pathetic the way this country is some times.
It was funny, after my mom had been arguing with the lady, when we went up to pay for the books, the fucking bitch wouldnt even look me in the eye. She kept her vision carefully glued to the floor, like if provoked I would attack her or something. It was as if she had never seen someone like me before, and that to look how I do I must have sold my soul to Satan or something. Its sad that people like me have become such a target of the scorn of the religious and conformed. Its as if they have no where else to give their hate to, like they have run out of targets. They hate other religions, they hate liberals, they hate blacks, they hate Mexicans, they hate Jews, they hate the modified, and basically anybody that doesnt fit into the strict confines of proper society. I cant wait to leave this land of religious nutcases and morality enforced rules. And I know this country probably will go to hell in a hand basket, but its not because of the Atheists, or the liberals, or people like me. It will be because of people like that lady in the bookstore, wishing to Christianize this country and make basic liberties illegal.
