Started my raw experiment yesterday! It's been 24 hours, rather more like 30, so for those interested in raw foods, what it feels like for me, or just the notion of screwing around with your body and what it's used to (shakin' things up inside, in other words)... here goes!
I'm trying to stay totally open and positive about this, but it certainly hasn't been all rainbows and sunshine thus far. Quite the roller coaster, actually, and I've barely begun!
Breakfast time yesterday meant my first raw meal of the experiment, my first home-uncooked raw meal (not cafe bought!)... Raw pancakes! I got this recipe from SGland's very own raw food group...
They were delicious. I did learn that my eyes were bigger that my stomach, though. These "pancakes" were more filling than I thought! (I did scarf down all the raspberries.)
I'll admit it, later in the day I accidentally ate some sesame treat-y bites that weren't raw. Whoops! In my defense, they were in the raw goodies section of the store, and made by a company that also makes raw treats. But it's no big deal; this is day 1 and my overall goal is 90-95% raw. I can't fathom cutting out even tea right now. Plus, everyone I've talked too has stressed that a raw diet is what you make it, and many devoted raw foodists recognize the health benefits of certain teas and tisanes. I think I do too, but for me tea is mostly a comfort, and the benefits are for the soul.
Back to the sesame treats. One bite and I knew they weren't raw, of course. Not only that, but they tasted burnt. I swear I had a mouthful of charcoal and sulphur! ...yeah, those are going back in the cupboards at least until after my 7-day experiment.
The rest of the afternoon I snacked on fruit when I felt like it and got some chickpeas and cashews soaking; the chickpeas are for sprouting and the cashews... for dinner! I don't have a dehydrator (or any clue how to dehydrate without one) and I wanted some "crackers" so I bought those. To top them off, I made raw cashew "cheese" (but I think I used too much garlic)...
Later in the evening, I had a sprout and quinoa salad (but I forgot to take a picture of that). I was feeling great! Energized, upbeat, and not missing cooked food too much. A few hours later, however, I was in the kitchen when I got hit with a wave of nausea and had to lie down. No idea where that came from, but I decided my body was rebelling and had some chamomile tea. Went to bed, ending day 1 on a bit of an iffy note.
This morning, I woke up really early (thanks, neighbours from the planet of construction), but I didn't feel like being awake just yet so I went back to bed. When I woke up a few hours later, wondering what I'd have for breakfast, I realized the thought of food was totally unappetizing. NO interest in eating, whatsoever. I thought I'd treat myself to a cup of coffee and hope it would make me hungrier and get my stomach growling, and it did... but I still wasn't into eating. That said, I love raspberries, so I had the leftovers from the first pancakes.
An hour later I was really feeling the lack of food, so I made up a little pancake plate and got through about half of it before feeling too full. Has my tummy shrunk so much already?
Feeling optimistic about fruit and veggie sushi rolls later, though! Those will be so much fun to make, I'll have to want to eat them!
Happy weekend!!
