Well... back home from the dorms... already...
i spent the night in J'lem and i got to say it was mostly boring... the internet doesn't work right... seems the wireless router randomly denies access to computers or something so some people can use the net and others don't... my pc being one of the denied... oh and the net has a password that no worker knows... so you have to ask the students/residents about... this was pointed out by the security guard, who apparently knows more about the place that the administrators....
first night... farewell party for a south african guy named brad... he is leaving this sunday the dorms as one can only stay there for half a year... it started slow... a few guys with booze... then enter the female denominator into the equation... all goes well.... and at some point a south african friend of brad seizes the music and tunes in heavy metal, starts headbanging and denies change of music... so the females were hastily driven away... this all happened while i stepped out of the building t talk on the phone... so in about 3-4 minutes the party turned into a drunken sitdownaroundatable thing.... and i don't drink so it became as boring as watching c-span
this morning i woke up and went to the lobby again to try and get wireless signal on my laptop... no luck... went to the second modem ... no good either... restarted computer... restarted routers... reconfigured connections on my pc... nothing... and then i see this flock of people leaving like birds in the wake of winter and realized most of the residents go away for the weekend... so i was faced with the idea of a boring 'lockdown' in j'lem knowing no one... no one to talk to in the dorms... no tv nor internet... no books since i left that home... and my cheery roommate inviting me to a dinner in the old city at some rabbi's place...v
don't get me wrong i'm not anti religious and i'm actually quite spiritual, but i definitely don't follow dogmas and i'm not likely to stand and do nothing if someone starts shoving the "i'm holier than thou" phrase to my face... the roommate is ok... he is not fanatic but he seems religious to the point of boredom... that is yet to be proven but so far he is winning with that invitation... before that he was coming on kind of cool guy, first thing he says to me is... "i may have a girl over tonight, you don't mind waiting?" since i was going to the party we just exchanged numbers and agreed to text if there was need of getting the room for oneself... but apparently nothing went on and when i got to the room he said about the rabbi dinner.... just puzzling...
oh... and one other thing at the party... after i came back in from the phone call and the girls had gone the guys are sitting talking... and one south african says to this other guy.... "girls are easy... if you haven't figured that out yet you better step up.... you only go to a girl and say: I'm a pig, you are a slut... and take it from there... it works at least 2 out of 10 times... unless you are looking for a wife... in which case you are fucked..." i couldn't stop laughing
while other south africans (yeah there are a lot of them...) one of them being the drunken heavy metal headbanger start "talking?" in drunken zulu/afrikaans/bush language... apparently saying nothing other than basic phrases from high school like "how are you?" "my name is..." and things like that...
so finally i made it to my room and that is pretty much it... i'm going back tomorrow night t j'lem since sunday morning is the first class... i expect i will sort the net problem soon so i can update more often and read comments/blogs and watch pics....
ps.
