Let's talk about the skin retouching. I really feel annoyed when I see the quality of the "skin softening" over here. I know the post-production is very important thing, but when you lose skin texture, nothing else matters.
So, if you want to do good photo shoots, make sure that your photographer knows how to do a good post-production. Trust me, it really does make a difference!

I think the skill of the photographer in lighting and composure can make all the difference in how much filter is needed. Old SG pics are pretty raw. Love your work man.
