For a very long time now I have avoided conversations about music the way I avoid conversations about religion. It's not that people get nearly as passionate, but because invariably someone will turn the conversation into a pissing contest about who knows the most bands that the fewest people like. The problem is that now I lack the tools to even talk about music. I only know rock, punk, country, rap, jazz, classic, and pop; god help me if a band doesn't fall exactly into one of those genres. I feel guilty being aware that the vocabulary exists, but that I knowing about it. Maybe I'll find a book when I have time to read a book again.
