For a very long time now I have avoided conversations about music the way I avoid conversations about religion. It's not that people get nearly as passionate, but because invariably someone will turn the conversation into a pissing contest about who knows the most bands that the fewest people like. The problem is that now I lack the tools to even talk about music. I only know rock, punk, country, rap, jazz, classic, and pop; god help me if a band doesn't fall exactly into one of those genres. I feel guilty being aware that the vocabulary exists, but that I knowing about it. Maybe I'll find a book when I have time to read a book again.

My friend who shattered his vertebra is getting better every day. Hi…
If you like a broad selection of music then you shouldn't worry about what other ppl think. As you continue to experience it you'll learn the sub-genres and nuances that go into categories and labels. You'll also learn that labels are simply that - ways people find to stick a certain sound into something they can refer to easily. I got into jazz late - really only in the past 8 years or so - and the more I listen the more I learn. Music is a great journey and if you are open-minded it will be a journey that will last your whole life.
Cheers,
