Fireflies
when shadows fall, I close my eyes
and see a world of fireflies,
a rainbow of colours, of varyous size,
a shimmering glow filling the skys.
and if i look close I see the heat,
pulsating lights sharing a beat.
ebs and tides that never repeat,
dancing sparks wherever they meet.
and if i look closer I see the sears,
on each firefly, the marks of its peers.
kith and kin, bound by the years,
sharing both laughter and tears
and if i look closer I see a small hole,
inexplicably, quietly, changing the whole.
at the recovering edges the greatest toll,
the loss of a treasured soul
and then I open my eyes, and have to say
what better tribute can I pay
to those who've gone, and those who stay
than to say "I love you" and live today
