is there anything better than dirty hands?
not just generally dirty.
no, hands that are soiled with accomplishment.
like when you finish a drawing and you look at your hand and it's grey and shiny with graphite.
or when you paint something and your hands are covered with lovely splotches, splatters, and smears.
how about after you've changed your oil and your hands emerge black and greasy.
or when you've been gardening and your hands are half-caked with wet mud and half-covered in dust.
it's a great feeling coming away a mess, i think.
takes me back to a younger, more tactile time.
coming away clean is just thermodynamically unnatural.
your work, your art--that's for you.
but the rest is for the universe.
ray.
