If you can make it out of town on the Nevada trip, much of Firefly was shot (presumably) in the dry, dusty environments around that general region. Lots of isolated areas there where you wouldn't be bothered, except maybe by critters and the brutal southwestern sun.
And as for the fear of flying, imagine Kaylee under the floor, tinkering with an extra, hidden engine in the baggage compartment. (set idea? hmmm...)

Yeah, all of the locations I am looking at are out of town. Northern Nevada, not near Vegas at all. But the landscape looks the same. Plenty of dust, dirt, tumbleweeds, cracked earth and exotic stone. Cactus is kinda rare out north, but there's a lot to look at. I might even do a Dune set near Sand Mountain sometime in the future.
