THE SHOW FUCKING KICKED ASS! So here is a detaied description of everything that happened after I got off the train in NYC with my two friends Max and Scott.
Ok, they were hungry, and I knew the area pretty well, because I lived in Turtle Bay @ the Vanderbilt YMCA for a semester. So we decided on chinese, but on the way, Scott saw Wendy's, and got a craving, so we ended up going there instead.
So we leave Wendy's and start to walk over to BB Kings. On our way we guess about who of those people walking west on 42nd street were too going to the show. We were right about most of them. So we get there half an hour before doors open, and there is already a pretty long line. As time moves on, the line gets longer and longer, untill we couldnt see the end of it. (We must have been about 100 to 150 kids back, and I would say there were at least 300 kids behind us.)
So doors open, we go in, some debate of where to stand, luckily, I convince them to take a spot at the far left side of the stage, in the second row, right in front off the bass cab's for the PA system. So time passes, and the plays gets fucking packed. The show probably sold out.
For the record, every fucking band rocked the bass so loud, made my whole body shake. I could feel it in my chest, collarbones, and calves. My chest is sore this morning, maybe from being infront of the bass cab for most of the show.
Then the first band comes on, Mnemic, from Denmark. None of us were familiar with their music, but I had heard some stuff, and it sounded like Industrial metal. Turned out that they were Death with tiny industrial and hardcore influences. It fucking awsome. Id say they are as good, if not better than The Black Dahlia Murder. So there isnt all that much movement in the crowd, but they seem to have a few loyal fans, screaming their lyrics. Anyways, best opening band I have probably ever seen. They play about a 30 min set. Their bassist is insane, and looks just like the singer from this local band called Apprentice. He gave me a pound, along with a bunch of other kids from our section of the crowd. Their set definately got everyone in the mood. 15 minute set change.
So then Hypocracy comes on. I give Max my cellphone and wallet, because I want to go check out the pit. I journy through the crowd to find that there is only one pit on the absolute opposite side of the stage, so instead of making my way over, and having to make my way back, I decide to start a pit on our side. I clear out a good pit, maybe 12 feet in diameter, and get a couple kids going, but then these 2 dickheads that each weighed about 250 lbs cleared the pit, not in the sence of having fun, but in the sence of stopping everyone elses. I didnt journey back to my spot just yet. I decided to stay to see if anything does open up. It does a couple times, but the same to cocks do the exact same thing. Furthermore, they are constantly making fun of the music, yet were singing the lyrics, meaning that they listen to the stuff that they were making fun of. They were also really disrespectful to the other fans, (one took a camera phone picture of him pretending to finger some girls ass, I almost said something, but didnt want to start a fight, especially one I knew I couldnt handle). So I work my way back over to my friends, who have taken a spot against the gaurd rail, after two guys had left in search of a pit. I couldnt get to them at this point without being rude, and getting in someone elses way, so I waited till the set ended, then took my place with them at the gaurd rail. I also took off my jacket, because it was hot and heavy, and hung it over the gaurd rail. They played about a 30 minute set as well. Apparrently a fight broke out after the set, over where the pit was, I stood up on the gaurd rail just intime to see one of the huge black security gaurds dragging a kid out of the club.
30 minute set break. Then Dark Tranquillity came on. They were absolutely fabulous. No complaints about their set at all. How they fit 6 guys on stage with no problems (4 up front, two guitarists, the bassist and the singer) I have no clue. Their stage presence was fucking great, with the exception of the keyboardist, but hey, not all keyboardists can go apeshit. Their singer came out into the crowd a bunch of times (staying on the other side of the rail, but stepping up onto it, so he was basically leaning on the crowd. They played a whole bunch of stuff from their older albums too. The singer is hella sexy. At the beginning of the set(maybe 5 min before they came on, through most of the set), so hot blond chick moved up and was standing behind me, and pressing against me a little, and I was about to turn around and say hi, when I noticed a larger guy in a red hoodie standing behind her, with a hand on her hip...oh well. The singer seems like some wierd combunation of a hirppy and a metalhead. In every way, from how he dresses, to how he headbangs, funny shit. After the set he and the guitarist with dreads came down again and shook a bunch of fans hands. The singer smelled really good, which is so fucking odd, he had just played a set, and was all sweaty and shit, but still smelled amazing. The guitarist on the otherhand, smelled like sweat and cheap cologne. OMG! durring their set some chick passed out. I didnt see her fall or anything, I saw her get passed over the gaurd rail, the security carried her to the back right past us, and then some guy went with her. Im guessing she was fucked up. So anyways, there was a point where the singer left the stage, and Scott could see through the curtain and said that the singer went back stage and hugged the girl who had passed out, and since then come to.
Thirty minute set break, setting up lights and a fog machine, as well as sound checks. There had been no set lists all night, from what I saw, so I saw them laying one out durring the set break and I asked the security gaurd, who was mad chill, to grab it for me at the end, and he said he would. So Soilwork came on, and fucking owned the place. One of the best performances I have ever seen. They definately should have been the headlining band (I think the set order was perfect, from the worst (that word should not be used for this show) band to the best). I was wondering why there were a bunch of hardcore/metalcore kids at the show. I mean kids wearing tight As I Lay Dying shirts, and PINK at a death metal show...didnt make sence, but Soilwork has a huge hardcore influence, so it all came together in my mind. Well anyways, they played a 14 song set with a three song encour. The whole set fucking blew me away, they are officially added to my list of favorite bands. Now I HAVE to go to Ozzfest. That means 3 maybe 4 huge concerts this summer. Ozzfest, Warped Tour, Sounds of the Underground tour, and possibly a 3 day hardcore and metal fest in Pa. Back to the show, Their stage presence was even better than DT's, they had some of that syncronized shit, but it didnt look cheesy, it looked fucking great. And their guitarist on our side of the stage just had this awsome vibe/attitude. The guitarist on the other side of the stage was wearing a shirt that said "Skanking Forever." I get the vibe that they were punk rock kids growing up, and then bloomed into metalheads as they started to get a little older....hm.....sound familiar. They had these rotating spot lights that were either blue or white and white floods on stage, as well as the fog machine which went off periodically, and at the beginning of most of their songs. Durring their set, the singer from Mnemic came out to watch, I gave him the rock on sign and yelled You guys fucking rocked. He gave me the sing back and yelled Thank You. So anyways, their set ends, they walk off stage, of course everyone starts changing SOILWORK SOILWORK, and of course the lights did not come up, so we yell and scream, knowing full well that they are coming back out, so they do. Me and my friends had been into it and headbanging the whole time, but werent really going all out/totally into it. We figure they are playing a song, what better time to waste all of our fucking energy just thrashing out to the music...we do....then they start to play another song, we are all now dizzy as fuck, but continue to headbang hard as motherfuckers. The third song begins, and Max cant do it anymore, but me and Scott soldier through, fucking amazing shit. Best feeling in the world. The show ends. Dont catch picks or sticks, but the security gaurd does grab me the set list! Ill post a picture of it later. I took a few pix on my camera phone, didnt come out too well, and I cant send them anywhere right now, kuz I dont have text messaging capabilities, but when I do, I will post some. I got a great one of the guitarist from DT.
Could Hardly walk up the stairs, to leave, we were so exhausted and dizzy from that encour. Getting to the top, Scott remembered he needed a hoody (both kuz he wanted one, and because it was fucking cold, and he didnt bring one. But the merch line was like an hour long. So I told him to ask someone online to buy it for him if he gave them the money, he asked a kid and the kid said sure. Max tried to do the same thing, but had nothing he wanted in his size. We mentioned waiting by the busses to catch the bands, but decided to say fuck it. We needed something to drink, so we went to the 24 hour McDonalds, next to the Wendy's we ate at before the show. We all got sodas, and Max got fries. Can u believe that the closest thing McDonalds has to a sports drink is Hi-C. Such bullshit. I ended up getting a Sprite. It hurt to swallow. It still hurts to swallow. We cought the last train out of GCT, The 1:30.
Awsome night. While I refuse to say the show was better than sex, it was damn close.
So then I tried to update last night when I got home, but I crashed half way through describing the Dark Tranquillity set. Hence the edit.
That sums it all up. Later.
