Have been following the events happening in France. I'm really disappointed with the French goverment handling of the events. First, my dreams was to move to Europe in the future because of its principles of equality and attitude towards living. The idea of the Republic as being color blind where everybody gets a chance to make a decent living has always been one of the reasons I was attracted to France. Little did I know that principles are not always apply in the real life. Really disappointed finding all the facts of what really goes on in the suburbs of France, very similar to the US undepriviledged neighborhoods . At least in the US , we fight racism head on , we talked about it openly and people have died in the 50s, 60s, and the 70s for equal rights during the Civil Rights Movement. We encourage diversity in schools, workplace, and we scorn people who preach hatred but we still have a long way to go. But I never expected that Europe would have the same social troubles that we as Americans face.
This could be France Civil Rights movement or at least to get their goverment to face that its treatment of immigrants have failed miserably. Europe just has a better way of keeping it under the rug, its social programs and welfare system are aimed toward improving the life of the less priviledged, but it takes more than money to make people feel included in its society. They need to feel that they are part of the country and are willing to contribute to its betterment when they are given the chance. Part of the solution depends on the French people themselves, they talked about being liberals, about not discriminating, they need to start looking at themselves and figure out whether or not they hold true to the principles of Republic.
What I don't get is that the people who lives in these suburbs are the sons and daughters of immigrants who helped rebuild France after World War II, I figured a better effort to integrate them into French society is not too much to ask.
The idea of the REPUBLIC is naive at best, as much as I want to believe in a utopia society, it is not going to happen, because people are not that nice . We are selfish, driven by irrational fears, money driven, and we love to hate people who are different .
