When I was a teen, we used to go to Denny's on Transit Road all the damn time. Many hours of school were skipped, many post-concert meals were eaten, and I ate breakfast there with my ex when I met her Mom when I was 16. So, a few months after I left school, I get a call from my friend Christina saying they'd just closed the Denny's at 3PM and that I needed to get there for an impromptu protest. Naturally, I agreed- partially because of my OMG EFF DA GUVURMINT 'tude at the time (which is still there, btw) and partially because I knew this was going to be something completely worth retelling years down the line.
Now, there was about a solid 20 people there, my friends Darren, Joe, and various others included. We had random Mickey Mouse flags, a giant American flag, some cardboard signs saying things like "DENNY'S CLOSING? BLAME BUSH!" and "HONK IF YOU LOVE KITTENS". And my sign, HONK FOR DENNY'S. So, at some point, a guy from the Buffalo News comes and starts taking notes. The one kid on there, Steve, he was a douche kinda. He was like, almost crying. We were telling this writer it was all in jest but Steve was apparently not having it. You can see in the article how ridiculous he was.
About an hour later, around 6:30ish, we were wrapping our soiree up by eating a nicely donated Pesci's Pizza when Derek, the photo guy, shows up. I was literally the ONLY ONE with a sign on still, my sick sandwich board-style HONK FOR DENNY'S sign. If memory serves correct-which it should- the back of the sign read FUCK NO, NOT MY DENNY'S. I just stood there looking at the road while he took pics. In a few, Darren tried getting in, but Derek told him it didn't look natural if he was gonna pose like that. He asked our names and ages and left.
Next morning, I went to McDonald's and grabbed my morning paper. I came home, and there on page 2 of the Local (PAGE 2 is a big deal if you aren't on the front page haha) is this-
Needless to say, I will never live this down. Not that I'd want to.
