Updating the Cingular saga.
The manager calls me back at 8pm, my time. I don't know what kind of hours they keep there, and it doesn't really matter, but I've gotten calls from these people at some strange times. Better than not getting them at all, but strange.
He says that $2.65 in TAX was taken out of my $10 credit. I said, NO. You don't get to tax my credit, the government doesn't get to tax my credit, I don't care how you have to show it/bill it, but I'm not paying TAX on what I'm supposed to be getting CREDITED. NO.
He kind of blathered some, like he was going to try and come up with some explanation of why I had to pay tax on the credit, but finally said he would take care of it.
Here's where it gets fun.
I'm to PAY $2.65 LESS than my current bill shows, because it can't be corrected now that it's already "generated." He's putting through a CREDIT for the $2.65, which will show on my NEXT bill, to cancel out what would be a balance due remaining from THIS bill. Then next month he says he'll also check the bill to make sure the full $10 credit for that bill gets credited and not taxed.
I told him this is sounding more and more complicated and less and less likely to get taken care of correctly, and that bottom line, I was sick of having to call him every month to fix something. He gave me the usual "I understand, I want it fixed too." But I'm still going to have to watchdog my bill, and I will be AMAZED if I see the correct credits and balances on the next bill, what with all this messing up and fixing. I would love to be amazed, I don't get amazed often enough. I hope to be pleasantly amazed with a correct bill next month.
Something more pleasant, they had this Johnny Cash tribute on tv tonight, and they played a performance from U2, from on tour, doing their tribute. It was really good, of course. Always good to see a U2 performance.

I have worked on implementing billing systems - it is stunningly complex and brain-warping but like all systems if the input is crap the output tends to match it.
On the other hand we never hear much from customers who are undercharged until we backbill - they thiought it was free - ha!!
