I've spent most of the last 24 hours tracking down information about my engineering album credits, toward this NARAS membership thing. The manager of my studio emailed me back with some info from the online app, which I was referring to the mail-in one, and then I finally came upon another page of faq's about the requirements for voting membership.
It turns out that the six tracks can all be from the same album. So if you have one full album credit, at least six tracks on it, your name listed in the liner notes, the album released and commercially distributed on a non-consignment basis in the United States, you qualify.
Which means I don't have to worry a bit about tracking down the distribution companies and release dates of the albums I worked on that I didn't have that info for, because several of mine do show up on allmusic.com, the place they send you very first, to verify your credits to them.
I did submit several more of my credits to allmusic.com, since there are albums that I worked on that I am listed in the credits of, that aren't listed there. They say it can take "a long time" for those to show up, if they verify them to their satisfaction. It would be nice to have those there, but it's even nicer to know that I am actually completely qualified just from what's already there.
So I'm submitting the online application, checking my bank account to see if I can actually afford the $150 for membership at this exact moment. I shouldn't be spending it on this, what with the car accident and all, but this is important to me. The membership is actually $100/yr, but since it's after Oct. 1, they do an 18-month membership from October until the next following March. Which is fair, you can join any time without getting only a couple of months for your fee.
Well, I get through the end of the application, and it is refusing to process the credit card. The card is perfectly valid and so on, no issues there. I don't know if the bug is really temporary, or if the online app doesn't actually work and I'm going to have to do the mail-in application after all. I would prefer to just be able to complete it with the so-called "convenience" of the internet, but the "convenience" is awfully frustrating when it doesn't actually work. We'll see. I'm joining, either way.
One one hand, I'm getting excited about something that maybe isn't such a big deal... ok, so I get to vote on the Grammys, but that's more a prestige thing than anything else. On the other hand, it does look good on the resume, and I do want to be a full member of a major trade organization in my field of work. So... I'm not sure if it's truly significant to my career that I go ahead and join NARAS, but I think it's important for me, and I think it's cool that I can do it.

The candles... well you can buy them through me directly. That's where most of my sales are, just carting them around with me and showing them to people wherever. I'm also still small enough that I don't mind doing custom orders!
