Well, it's Independence Day. One of my favorite holidays, and my first Fourth of July here in Colorado. But you know, it really doesn't feel much like a holiday...
Let me tell you why.
Although progress has been made, the wildfires (I'm sure the entire nation has heard of the Waldo Canyon Fire by now) here in the Springs and further north are still burning. There are people whose lives have been ended abruptly, homes burnt to rubble, and entire neighborhoods diminished to debris. Most of us, including myself, have been so blessed in that we haven't lost our lives or homes, but I can't help but feel guilty for those who did lose something or someone.
Two hundred thirty six years ago today, our forefathers of this great country declared independence. They wanted freedom for generations to come, for us. We became one of the greatest countries in history. Though we have our flaws, we have so much to be thankful for, so much more than the majority of us even realize. But there are people here in Colorado that just so recently lost everything, and those are the ones I have on my mind.
If you can help, It's on behalf of those affected by this disaster that I ask you, please do so.
You can donate to the disaster relief effort here:
Habitat for Humanity
Colorado Red Cross
I understand that some of you may not agree with/support these two organizations, so if you choose to donate to a different organization, please do so, but be careful. Recently, as with most tragedies, there are people out there trying to take advantage of this disaster, and take your cash for selfish reasons. Don't fall victim to some con artist looking to make a buck or two.
Anything you can give, even the smallest bit, can help give someone their hope back. On this Independence Day, let's help support those who need it most- our fellow Americans, here at home, in need. And even though I won't be watching fireworks tonight, or grilling brauts for me and my husband, I've still got a reason to support my country.
If you have donated, or will be donating soon, my greatest thanks go out to you.
xoxo
