It is my opinion that the most dangerous attitude in the world is to believe that you are "Normal" and "Average". It is almost as dangerous as the belief that you are "Special" and far more widespread and subversive.
Many of our politicians think they are both "normal" ("just an average shmoe") and "special" ("privileged leader of the community"). You can see it colour their very thoughts when they talk of their ideals and put down their opposition.

When you have much more money (or power) than average and work in an environment where everyone shares that privelege your view of the world becomes distorted and you fail to comprehendthe beliefs and needs of those with close to or less than average money or power. This is often a reason why conservative politicians are so anti-"poor" because "If I'm normal and I'm doing so well, then they're just incompetent/crazy/lazy". Non-conservative Polticians are no better, thinking that others are "evil/corrupt/ignorant" because they disagree with the politicians "normal thinking".
I have never considered myself normal or average, nor would I want to. In my life, I have endured domestic violence, poverty, unemployment and I was part of the Goth Scene. The first and last part of those are not normal, and I distrust people who think that way.
