Today I posted on the POTD for maybe the second or third time. Why? Well, mostly because I like the Norse Mythology. That being said, the Aesir were, to me, a hell of a lot more dysfunctional than the Olympians. The theme of sex, jealousy and revenge underlie a lot of Olympian Tales but when you read the Norse it seems more about hate, rage and contempt. It might have been a reflection of the attitude of the Norse towards Nature, which I suspect was mostly caution.
I do shake my head a little at the modern concept of Odin as benevolent and Thor as a nice guy. Odin was a god of Death, Battle and Dark Magic. Thor was representative of Storms and Strength. He also did a lot of screwing around and I prefer the representation of him in the "Sandman" Comics due to his attitudes in the mythology ;). Loki was actually reasonably decent until the Ring of Fafnir tales but then he was only adopted Aesir and kind of changeable being a Fire Spirit ;). Of them all, Tyr is the Aesir I respect the most, since in the Tales I remember, when he appears, he tends to be doing something brave or sacrificial.
