The other night.. Thursday night actually, I was sitting here on my computer around 1:30-2am when I heard this droning in the background over my music. So, I took out my earphones, and at the same time I did that; I could smell smoke and KNEW what the other sound was. I checked my apartment, no alarms on my floor, then checked the basement. As soon as I opened the door, the sound got louder, and I could see the smoke. I ran downstairs to see if it was something that could be contained right then, but didn't see any point of origin. So I ran back upstairs, shouted at my roommate to get up, and we went down to check for the source while he tried calling the people that live upstairs, since the smoke was coming from their side of the basement (can I just say that those are some difficult ass people to wake up. We called about 7 times, banged on their door, shouted... even when the fire trucks got there, no one came down until about 15 minutes later). We looked all over and he concluded that it was coming from the furnace of the upstairs apartment. We called the fire department, just to be sure, and they came down and confirmed it. What had happened was that there had been a blow-back from the upstairs apartment's furnace since neither furnace had been cleaned in about 5 years. So the fire department shut off both furnaces and instructed us to get them serviced. We called the oil company first thing in the morning, but they didn't come until 5ish, the whole day, no heat or hot water... that sucked. Funny thing is, with no heat, I was debating cooking, since the hot oven would at least provide some heat, but I had been lazy the night before and not done the dishes, and I didn't want to waste what hot water we may have had to wash them. Grrr... However, all is right again and I can be warm and bathe without worry.
On a lighter, more tasty note. I tried cooking lamb for the first time earlier, said Thursday night. Please excuse me while I pat myself on the back. It was rather tasty. My roommate who loves lamb, gave it his seal of approval, so I guess I can put this in the win column and add it to the cookbook. If anyone is interested, let me know I'll share the recipe with you. Be forewarned; It involves mint and pomegranate, sounds odd I know (well it did to me, even when I came up with it), but it works. I might have to go out and buy some more lamb so I can make it for dinner tonight.
