Fair enough on the Ravel tip. I was lucky enough never to have had any of it shoved down my throat - it's all been a process of discovery for me so Daphnis et Chloe et al are pure magic - especially from an orchestration point of view. Plus, to be honest, I'm sick to death of Mozart, Beethoven, Bach and the like. Ol' Wolfgang may have never written a bad note but that's all he ever did. Write notes. Never textures. That said, had he been born a century or two later he probably would have kicked the shit out of all my current favourites so I can't really hold it against him.

Nice wand, sorry you're disappointed by the book. Or was it the movie? I actually quite enjoyed the movie but haven't read the book yet - so no spoilers!

(Yes, I'm excited.)
zetetic:
lol, you sure are. To be fair, I'm really looking forward to reading it too. I read a particularly asinine article blog on the guardian website bemoaning Rowling's terrible prose and how it's destroying the minds of our children and blah, blah blah. And there were a fair number of people who waded in against adults reading it; that they must be in some way educationally challenged.

Get a fucking life is what I say to that. Looking forward to it wink
s_eldorado:
I'm rather excited for it too. You have the most beautiful cat btw. But your music list is missing a couple of key composers - shame on you! Where Stravinsky? Where Ravel? Where Rodrigo? And what of Barber?

Really.

wink

Sorry to hear you're not feeling so great. But, on the plus side, that is one hell of a squishy cat!

I picked up some more Paul Hindemith the other day:
When lilacs last in the door-yard bloom'd. A Requiem "For those we love"

It's dark, brooding and really rather good. Thank you for the heads up. Funnily enough I would have come across him anyway through my studies. I'm doing my dissertation on Adorno's aesthetics and Adorno references him a lot. Although it is only to constantly point out what a charlatan he is. But Adorno's a right old moody-guts when it comes to music. For him it's serialism or nothing. tongue

Anyways, hope you're feeling better. take care

johnesmoke:

he is such a prize goon! how's it going?
zetetic:
not bad. Just figured I'd pop over, say 'hi' in that virtual-kind-of-a-way. the classical music group isn't exactly the most dynamic and can't be relied upon to keep up with folks.

well, i've been slowly working my way through your suggestions (Hindemith et al) and am currently nose to the grindstone studying classical rhetoric in order to wax lyrical (a panegyric if you will wink) about Vico.

Also, I was hoping to ply you for more information concerning composers I should check out as you seem to know somewhat more about it than me.

Well, there you have it. I guess this is bye (also in a virtual kind of way) smile

I can sing this word-for-word, actions included.

I'm thinking of doing a recording of myself singing it and putting it onto youtube.

I have waaaaay too much time on my hands.

Well I think the cat's out of the bag as far as the namesake goes. And that pretty much covers the pic too!

take care
zetetic:
Thanks for the cookie. how did you know I like blueberry? wink

Anyway, on your recommendation I swung by the university library and procured myself a stash of Mr. Hindemith. I'm currently blasting my ears to Das Unaufhorliche and very much enjoying it. Psathas is proving more elusive at the mo'...

Do you like Giya Kancheli or Heiner Goebells? There are definitely elements of them in Hindemith (or maybe it's the other way 'round - damn it's a postmodern world...)
