something odd happened at the coffee shop today. i had just finished my lunch and was enjoying a book and some very good iced tea when i noticed a somewhat large catapillar crawling along the bottom of a display case. setting my book down i brushed it into my hand and took it outside so it wouldn't accidently get killed.
after i had retaken my seat a woman approached me and introduced herself then told me she has been writing a paper on asian religion/philosophy and was in the process of describing it to a friend in an email when she saw what i did, summing up her whole e-mail in one action. she added that once she saw that the book i was reading, the tao te ching, was also what she was reading she felt compelled to come over and tell me about the whole thing. after which we discussed the book and i made some reading recommendations to her.
a curious and wholly enjoyable encouner.

I did, however, snag a copy of Roshomon, the book. It looks like it is a translation of the screenplay and a ton of ohotos from the set. I got it for free too. He had it on a rack outside and listed it as fifty cents. I looked at the rack after I had purchased $40 worth of books and when I came back inside the guy told me just to keep it....apparently he didn't want an extra fifty cents.
