On Firearms
I'm a gun owner. I own a gun. Just one of them, a Mosin-Nagant Model 1891/30 Russian battle rifle stamped with a star and a "1943" on it. Why do I own a gun? Because of three reasons (ranked in importance):
1. I have a degree in History, focusing on military history, specifically the Second World War. Buying a piece of history like that is freakin' sweet. The fact that it shoots is literally just an added bonus.
2. It was $100. Call me a bargain shopper, but paying $100 for something historical and neat isn't so bad. Also, a standard high-power rifle tends to cost about a bashmillion dollars. It was a freakin' deal.
3. I like having one just to plink targets with.
I went to a gun show this weekend and let me tell you, there are some FREAKS out there. Nazis. Yeah. Nazis. I hate Nazis. Not just like the way cops are Nazis, but honest flag-waving bald-headed swastika-loving Nazis. It's people like that that have me convinced that the NRA is an unnecessary evil, if not an outright danger to citizens such as you and I. Sure, there's a bunch of people there that were, well, probably kinda sane, but a whole lot more I was pretty iffy about.
It occurred to me that I was probably looking in the mirror, so I did a self-assessment. Do I own a gun for home defense? No. Do I support a citizen's right to own a gun? Umm . . . no. So why do I own a gun? Because the law hasn't been changed/clarified yet. Do I support the NRA? FUCK no! So am I a hypocrite? Umm . . . yes. I am a hypocrite.
I'm a hypocrite. Do as I say, but not as I do. Or am I in the clear, since I'm interested in the historical value of the weapons? I don't know.
Judge me. Feel free to. Be mean. I guess I deserve praise or punishment in equal amount.
