Hello all
SO today I want to write more about the music I love.
This entry is called Songs I Wished I'd Written!
As you may, or may not, know...I play guitar. I sing too. Both with an alarming level of mediocrity that boggles the mind. I endeavor to write songs. Generally, they are of a personal nature that seems to make me look as though I'm the bitterest human in the world. heh. Maybe I am, but, that, in the end, is beside the point. I write what I write because it just kind of comes to me.
As a songwriter, I like to steep myself in as much music as I can, listening to all manner of styles....seriously....
In my musical meanderings, I have often come upon songs that I have fallen so in love with, I desperately wish I could have been the one to have produced such beauty, such wonder.
Here is a Brief list of those songs:
Beat Surrender by the Jam When it comes to anthems of a generation or subculture, I think this one really hits the nail on the head, Paul Weller & the Jam do a fantastic job of capturing the Mod scene of the 80's in this Northern Soul tune.
You Are the Everything by REM Just a sweet & kind of quirky song about love.
Love & Anger by Kate Bush Ms. Bush has always been such a wonderful songwriter, and so talented in arranging that this one really stands the test of time. It helps that Dave Gilmore from Pink Floyd does guitars on this too.
In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel It's In Your Eyes, for pete's sake, need I say more?
the Holiday Song by the Pixies In my humble opinion, one of their best. Really epitomal of their particular vibe.
It's Not My Birthday by They Might Be Giants TMBG are just wonderful. Just off center, and so much fun, how can one NOT like them?
Vapour Trail by Ride A really pretty song, by one of the more unsung bands of the late 80s & early 90s. One can get lost in the ambience of this song.
L.A. County by Lyle Lovett How do you pick just one Lyle Lovett song? I'm a fan of the murder ballad, and this one takes the form to a really pleasant level...a song of lost love in the extreme, Mr Lovett just knows how to tell a story.
Love will tear us apart by Joy Division So sad.
The Milkman of Human Kindness by Billy Bragg Mr Bragg is perhaps one of the greatest songwriters I have had the pleasure of listening to, and this song is so amazing lyrically and musically....that it really belies it's simplicity.
New Slang by the Shins Wow. Just wow.
Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac Again with the love songs that aren't quite traditional love songs. I think Fleetwood Mac are severely underrated in the annals of modern popular music. And Lindsey Buckingham is one hell of a guitar player.
Wake Up Dolores by Los Lobos One of my 3 most Favorite bands ever(t'others being REM & the Pixies), this song is on the album Kiko, one of the more experimental albums they produced. A beautifully put together song, rich and mesmerizing.
Charm by the Wild Colonials This song is kind of bitter, I like it.
A Nail Won't Fix A Broken Heart by the Low & Sweet Orchestra Ah, lost love and yearning. What a great combo! Add to that a bit of whiskey soaked vocal, and well, you can't really lose, can you? Shame these guys didn't go super far. I liked them. AND the band feature Dermot Mulroney on Mandolin! Go Dirty Steve!
Ruby's Arms by Tom Waits The heart break in this songs is so bittersweet....a gem among gems.
So, this is just a little insight into the music part of my mind...I love talking about & learning about music. These are just some of the artists who have been or become part of my personal musical lexicon.
More to come...or you can just tell me to shaddup!
